Designed by a smaller developer called GONG Gaming, Skulls Heap is one of about 10 different slot machines that Microgaming launches as exclusive titles in a span of just a few weeks. It’s going to need to be very good, in order to get the attention of players. It might just get the chance, since it’s inspired by the Mexican Day of Dead.
Skulls Heap has a total of 4096 ways to win, and it has 6x4 reels to host them. It’s a slot which combines regular and multiplier wilds, with scatters and free spins. Not a bad combo, particularly since it can lead to wins of up to 3,000x the stake. The high volatility of the game is a downside, but the RTP is at the right level, of 96.04%.
Wagers can start from as little as $0.40, it will be enough to target all potential ways to win. Of course, you may increase the bet if you want to, up to $20 per spin.
When it comes to rewards, the promise is that the slot will pay up to 3,000x the stake. It’s far from a great outcome, in a slot whose volatility is supposed to be high. However, that’s just how the gameplay was built, and the RTP of 96.04% tells us that this is a fair enough game. With thousands of ways to win, as well as wild multipliers during free spins, I would’ve expected for much bigger wins to be possible though.
The most common feature of all, the wild symbol can be used to create new winning combinations. For that to happen, you need it appearing on the right reel, while the others get matching regular symbols. Only reels 2-6 can receive wild symbols on them. A combo forms if you have 3+ symbols for it, landing on just as many reels, left to right.
Next, there is also the free spins feature to talk about. It has its own scatters to trigger it, sporting the Free Spins logo. 3 such symbols will be sufficient, to trigger the free spins, but you can have up to 6 scatters. In exchange, the game will deliver 8 to 100 free spins, depending on just how many scatters contributed. Retriggering the free spins, with 5 to 100 more rounds added, is possible with 2 to 6 scatters, once you get into this mode.
What you get extra at this point, is a wild multiplier, which will improve the value of wins by 2x, 3x or 5x. If there are several wild multipliers in a combo, their values get added together.
Inspired by Mexico and one of its most popular holidays, dedicated to the dead, Skulls Heap was well designed by Gong Gaming. They crafted a mix of appropriate symbols (Skulls, tequila bottle, cactus plant, candles with flowers), filler symbols (the six Royals between 9 and A) and feature triggers (the wild Heart and the scattered free spins logo).
It is a very good looking game, no question about it, but then again that seems to be the case with all slot machines that target this particular holiday.
Overall, I found Skulls Heap a pretty good release. This slot game, which is a joined effort between Microgaming and GONG Gaming Technologies, offers a good range of features, but ultimately the low top payout might disappoint since it comes with high volatility.
