It looks like a release that’s going to get its inspiration from medieval warriors, and as such, the use of shields on its reels is warranted. The graphics look good, and there are some not quite standard major features to be discovered inside as well. This is going to be an exclusive at Microgaming casinos.

The game’s main features will include regular wilds, along with a variety of modifiers (Double Reels, Wilds, Multipliers, Expanding Wilds) that can make the action a lot more exciting. Add the free spins as well, and it shouldn’t be a surprise that this slot machine can deliver a 12,150x the stake jackpot. RTP-wise, it’s looking pretty good, is set to 96.19%.

Empire Shields Game Features

One of the major symbols that will be found inside, the wild is there to help out by replacing others and forming new combinations. It could also pay by itself, as its own combinations bring you 15x the round’s stake per fully covered line.

The positions shown at the top of the five reels are occupied by Toppers, each one bringing a different modifier. As the Toppers charge at random, they eventually unleash their features.

Double Reel: adds extra symbols to the reel, and boosts the number of ways to win (could take it up to 7,776 ways).
Multipliers: up to 10x multipliers can be applied to the wins that are formed through its reel. You can add up multipliers from several Toppers.

The other big feature is going to take the form of free spins. Activated via 3 to 5 scatters, it gives you a picking feature first, where you can win 5 toppers to be active. You then get your 10 free spins, to use those modifiers in. Retriggering the feature adds 10 more spins each time.

You still need to charge the Toppers up, they don’t activate on their own at the start. If you haven’t managed to do it yourself, then the game does it during the last round.

Theme & Design

It’s the type of design to blend fantasy elements and the Middle Ages, with the action being built around battles. There is some sort of fortress in the background, and a storm is gathering in the sky, while the reels are in front and they come with Toppers (special meters that get filled randomly, at the top).

The initial symbols deliver six Royals, followed by images of pendants, rings, four warriors, the W wild, and the Lion scatter.

Conclusion

Overall, I found Empire Shields to be a slot machine that has an enjoyable design, and a good set of features. I’m not a big fan of the random element in the way the Toppers charge, I would’ve preferred getting symbols on the reels to do it.
