Towering Pays Excalibur Slot Machine Review

The Towering Pays series has had quite a few great slot machines already, and most of them have come from GamesLab, in collaboration with Yggdrasil. We’ve seen a game dedicated to Valhalla just a few months ago, and now we’re checking out another that’s based on the legend of King Arthur, and his sword. Towering Pays: Excalibur is the name of this brand-new game.

Towering Pays: Excalibur will play with 5x3 reels and 15 active lines, but there is a chance to get up to 65 lines active in certain cases when the game area gets bigger (up to 5x8 reels). There is a long list of great features that you can explore, ranging from basic wilds to prize multipliers (up to 10x), Excalibur Magic, Stage Play progression with its game area expansion, a Feature Wheel, and a lot of other extras that you can unlock as you play.

Towering Pays: Excalibur Betting and Prizes

Your wagers will start from a minimum of just $0.25, and that’s enough to have the entire game area covered. You are going up from there, as high as $25 per spin.

You can also activate a Quest Bet, for a better chance of triggering the Hold & Spin. For this, you pay an extra 15 coins ($0.40 to $40 is the new range).

As for the rewards that are possible, they don’t go extremely high, but you can still claim excellent rewards. Up to 1,000x, the stake is paid during the Hold & Spins, there are big multipliers (up to 10x) to apply on regular wins, and the chance to get more active lines as well.

Towering Pays: Excalibur Game Features

One of the most basic feature symbols that the slot will offer, is the King Arthur Wild. Landing on all reels, it’s often used as a substitute if the requirements are met, but it can also get you paid directly, in which case it will offer 250x the stake on each line it fully covers.

Excalibur Magic is a feature that requires the appearance of the sword symbols, possible only on the first three reels during paid spins and certain features, and on the first four during others (Arthur and Camelot). When the game expands to its full size, it may land on all of them. These sword symbols are used as mystery positions, so they all transform into a single random symbol.

That same Excalibur symbol has a second role, as its appearance on the reels will allow the game to get to the next stage. This means that the slot adds one extra row, and 10 more active lines, starting from the next round. You can get from 5x3 to 5x8 reels, and from 15 lines to 65 lines. The game area resets when you get through the Avalon bonus.

I enjoyed the Prize Multiplier especially, though this one is random for winning spins, not guaranteed. Depending on the game area, you can get wins multiplied by 2x for 5x3 reels, and it goes up from there. Best case, you can have 2x to 10x multipliers for 5x8 reels active.

Another feature that’s used, is the Feature Wheel, which requires its own scatters landing on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th reels. It spins and can give you access to Win Spins, Hold & Spin, Lancelot free spins, and even upgrades. If upgraded, you can get Merlin free spins or another upgrade. Next, the new feature is the Arthur free spins, while the fourth level of the wheel can give you Camelot free spins. During free spins, that same wheel gives you only Win Spins.

Avalon: a feature that you get from the largest game area (5x8 reels) if you get Excalibur to show up. It has its own feature wheels, that can grant you access to the various types of free spins.
Win Spins: Excalibur takes over the first three reels, only the last two spin. The mystery symbols transform into a single another symbol, and you get paid.

There are several types of free spins, but they all give you 6 rounds to start with:

Lancelot: can give you a random prize multiplier during any winning round.
Merlin: you’re guaranteed to get a prize multiplier, after any win.
Arthur: a chance at a prize multiplier after wins, but Excalibur now lands on the 4th reel as well.
Camelot: a chance at a prize multiplier for wins, and Excalibur either land on the first four reels, or on all five (when a game area has 5x8 reels).

Finally, a Hold & Spin option is included, triggered via 6 scattered Shields or through a Feature Wheel. It’s a common mechanic, with 3 re-spins that can reset when more bonus symbols land. There is an extra jackpot, of 1,000x the stake, for filling all symbol positions.

Theme & Design

It’s about Camelot and King Arthur, and Excalibur of course, but the design shows them all as stone statues, not as real characters. Symbols give us images of Excalibur, Shields, King Arthur wilds, and regulars with Guinevere, Wolf, Horse, Merlin, and others. The four-card suit icons are last on the list.

Conclusion

Towering Pays: Excalibur offers a ton of great features, it’s really difficult for anyone to get bored playing this slot game. I would’ve preferred a higher RTP, but overall this is another good title for the series.
