One of the more memorable creatures from the legends of Ancient Greece, Medusa has been a focus for quite a few slot machines already, and the latest one to take advantage of her story is Rival Gaming. They designed Wrath of Medusa, a game with clear inspiration from Ancient Greece, which relies on computer-made graphics, which could be a pro or a con for it, depending on the player.
Wrath of Medusa gives us 5x3 reels, where there will be 20 lines active at all times. Up to 500x payouts appear possible per spin, with rewards of $25,000 being the highest that the game will go, for a single round. Other than that, expect a below average Return to Player, of just 93.86%, one of the reasons why you might not be interested in this game. On the list of pros, I’d mention its features, which give us expanding Medusa wilds, Perseus scatters and free spins with sticky wilds.
Though you only get coin denomination of up to $0.25, the slot allows for 1 to 10 coins to be sent to each of its 20 fixed lines. As such, you get a betting range of $0.20 to $50, with up to $2.50 wagered per line.
A good payout will only come via regular symbols, as these are the only ones to provide you with wins. Up to 500x the stake is offered, for a screen filled with the new slot’s top symbols, the ones with the Medusa Coin. You get help to reach that stage, either via expanding or sticky wilds, depending on the area of the game that you’re at.
There is at least one thing to be careful about in Wrath of Medusa. The game’s RTP is at a lowly 93.86%, quite a bit lower than the industry average of 96%.
The Medusa Wild, which you get in the base game on the middle three columns, will have the ability to expand on its reel. It will do so only if this can bring you a new winning combination. This symbol will be a substitute, to be used together with any symbols found on the same lines, to create new wins for you.
The way to the free spins feature will have to go through the Perseus scatter, which you get on all five reels. You need it landing on 3 to 5 of those reels, to get a feature where you make a pick, and then find out how many free spins you’ve got.
You will have sticky Soldier Wilds to use in this new mode, so when they land, the wilds will remain in their positions if they can form a win. If they are included in a win, then they give you re-spins as well, with the potential to get more sticky wilds, and even more re-spins. They go away once the re-spins are done though.
Though highly detailed, the design from Wrath of Medusa is not one that I would enjoy. It looks a bit on the old side, perhaps something that we would’ve appreciated a decade ago, but the graphics in slot machines have advanced quickly since then. Perseus, Medusa, Soldiers, these will be the feature symbols you encounter. Regular symbols begin with the card suits, four of them, along with icons showing soldier helmets, pottery, swords, shields, bow and shield, snake, crossed swords and Medusa Coins.
While I enjoyed some of the things that Wrath of Medusa had to offer, ultimately I’m disappointed with its very low RTP, and its graphics and payout potential don’t help it much either.
