Serpent Shrine Slot Machine Review

Serpent Shrine is a collaboration between Fantasma Games and Relax Gaming, with the former being the developer in this case. They’ve designed a game with a fantasy setting, taking the action deep within an ancient forest, where we discover the shrine of a Snake god. Great looking game as always, and when we add the interesting mechanics and big potential, I think that it has a couple of excellent arguments to make for itself.

You play with 5 active reels, but their size can vary from the original 2-3-3-3-2 to the versions where each column gets 7 symbols. The number of ways to win changes as well, between 108 and 16,807. Rewards of over 10,000x the stake are dangled in front of us, but this will be a game where the volatility is set to High, even as the RTP is at a very respectable setting, of 96.53%. A couple of excellent features were introduced, besides the ability that the reels have to expand. We find a Bomb and a Butterfly feature to unlock the blocked positions on those five reels, and there are also wilds, free spins and multipliers of up to 100x.

Betting and Prizes

To start things off, you need to pick a wager, and this will be possible from a new screen. It lists several available bet values, with the smaller being worth $0.20, while the highest gets to $100.

Payouts can be very good, but that shouldn’t be a surprise in a slot machine which has up to 16,807 ways to win at times, along with big multipliers during its free spins. The mentioned rewards are apparently as high as 10,013x the stake.

Games with big rewards tend to have very high volatility as well, and Serpent Shrine has to do the same thing. While it does give you a winning spin for every four rounds played, on average, it’s still the type of game where you tend to lose more than you win, even in the short run. Luckily, long term we find a 96.53% RTP mentioned here, so we know that it’s not an unfair game, just one that has a certain high risk/high reward promise.

Serpent Shrine Game Features

As each round starts, you get 2-3-3-3-2 symbols unlocked at the bottom of the game area, while the area above consists of 3 Bombs and 19 Blockers.

Butterfly is a feature which unlocks three of those 22 positions that are blocked at the top, but first you need the Butterfly Wilds being part of a winning combo. The result is an expansion of the game area, along with a respin for the reels which got bigger. You can keep getting new Butterfly Wilds as well, through the following respins.

If a Bomb position is selected to be unlocked, then the explosion that follows will do the same for the nearby locations, both vertically and horizontally. Butterfly Wilds are positioned where the Bombs used to be, if there are respins to get through.

If you manage to unlock all positions on the five reels, then you trigger the game’s free spins. These are called the Snake Free Spins, there are 5 of them, and each one gets a different multiplier. You start off with the usual prizes for the first round, but they get a 2x multiplier for the 2nd, 5x for the 3rd, 20x for the 4th, and 100x for the 5th free spin. Unfortunately, there is also a blocker Snake symbol, which moves on the reels and covers positions, so you will not be able to form combinations on some of the lines. The bigger the multiplier, the lower number of ways to win, and for the 5th round you only get the original 108 ways to use.

The way to get the Snake to move back a bit, is by landing Butterfly Wilds, which attack it and make it occupy less space. Get three attacks on the Snake this way, to trigger Super Free Spins,with 2 rounds available and 100x multipliers applied. There are no blocker positions here, so you get to use those multipliers on all 16,807 active ways.

Theme & Design

It’s a fantasy themed game, with a very interesting design, involving a snake as the villain, and explorers of the jungle as main characters. These characters come colored in red, green and purple, and they’re designed as skeletons. Medium symbols also include images of three corresponding gemstones, along with low value lamps, maps and pickaxe.

Conclusion

Serpent Shrine is a game worth exploring, using big payouts along with higher risk, but keeping it all fair by giving us an above average RTP. It might not be for everyone as a result, but it’s still the type of slot machine that is different from most of the others.

The blocker positions might be annoying during the free spins, when there are big multipliers to be used, but the slot still gives you a chance at unlocking those locations, so even that is not a real issue.

Overall, great game and highly recommended, but only if you can stand the heat, this is not for casuals.
