One of the many new games that Relax Gaming are currently working on, is a slot machine called Deep Descent. Its title brings flavors of a marine themed title, allowing us to see what’s in the hidden depths of the ocean, a place we can always count on to be a beautiful setting in a slot. It ends up being one of their more volatile offerings, and there will be both pros and cons to this approach, particularly since they paired it with a below average RTP.
Deep Descent slot offers 243 ways to win on 5x3 reels, but as the game area has the ability to expand to 5x5 reels, you could end up with 3,125 ways to win at times. The potential is pretty good, up to 10,000x the stake, but I can’t help but think what would’ve been possible if they gave us a decent RTP, rather than the below average 95% level that’s announced. Otherwise, it’s a highly volatile slot game, that has among its special features the wild, respins, collectable symbols, and the expanding game area.
A very small wager, of just $0.10, will trigger a spin with the game’s 243 ways to win active. Increase it as much as you want to, it’s possible to hit $50 per spin even, but keep in mind that it’s a risky one to wager big on.
Returns of up to 10,000x the stake are mentioned as possible in Deep Descent, so you could be looking at a $500,000 jackpot even. The downside is that they’ve made it a highly volatile slot machine, but the RTP didn’t go to similar heights. Instead, we’re getting a 95% Return to Player, while we generally expect for a fair game to be at 96% or higher.
It’s a short list of features that you get in Deep Descent, but they can be quite powerful, as the high volatility will attest to.
For starters, there is a sticky wild symbol, typically shown as a number printed on the side of a golden box. When it lands, this substitute symbol will be locked, and then the game will go through a number of respins (decided by the number shown on the wild). All regular positions respin, while the wilds stick around to help out with any new combinations they can contribute to.
The other side of the game’s features, will come via the special symbol, which is randomly chosen for each spin. You need to form winning combinations that involve the special symbol of the round, in order to advance in level and increase the game area.
You need to collect 7 special symbols initially, in order to get to the second level. This can happen all at once, or through a series of respins in a single round.
At level 2, you get a bigger game area, now with 5x4 reels and 1,024 ways to win, plus an extra wild. Here, you need to collect a total of 21 special symbols from winning combinations, to advance again.
At the 3rd level, you get the maximum game area size, with 5x5 reels and 3,125 ways to win. Once again, there is a wild placed on the reels, guaranteeing you a number of respins.
Thanks to the top symbol, which has a cartoon image of Jacques Cousteau, we know where the inspiration for this slot machine has come from. It’s not a very serious looking design though, they definitely didn’t go for the realistic angle. It’s got cartoon-style graphics, which typically range from the four basic card suits, to the various types of fish (green, red, gold), and the image of Cousteau.
Deep Descent makes it interesting for us, but only up to a certain point. I enjoyed some things about it, but not the 95% RTP, so while an experienced player might be interested to at least try it out, I wouldn’t recommend it as a long term option.
