A prolific developer of slot machines, Pragmatic Play has access to the Megaways franchise, and they’ve released several good games already, with this engine as support. Buffalo King Megaways is the latest we’ve seen announced, and it’s one to feature a wildlife-themed cast of top symbols, along with an interesting layout.
Buffalo King Megaways is a slot that will offer 6 reels and up to 8 symbols on each. This allows for the game area which has up to 200,704 ways active. For a Megaways slot, the 5,000x jackpot that we’ve seen mentioned in Buffalo King is not a huge return. Most of these slots will do a lot better actually, so that could be a disappointment for some players. It’s not an unfair title though, as the 96.52% RTP will tell us.
What we’re seeing, is a game area that has 6 reels, and that is common for the Megaways franchise, as is the horizontal reel which is seen at the top of reels 2-5. The difference is that you get up to 8 symbols per reel now, while most only reach a maximum of 7. Up to 200,704 ways can be available in one spin, while regular Megaways slots go up to 117,649. A definite improvement then, it’s just a shame that the top jackpot is so low.
Once you manage to form a combo, which will require 3 to 6 symbols appearing on as many reels, there is a Tumble system in place as well. This removes winning symbols, and a new set will come into the land in those empty spots. Form new wins then, and the Tumbles continue to trigger, all part of the same initial paid spin.
There will be help from a wild symbol as well, but you will only see it show up on the middle reels. You can recognize them by the image of the mountain/big rock shown on them.
As for the slot’s biggest feature, which includes 12 to 22 free spins, it will require 4 to 6 scatter symbols landing first. You get paid by them up to 100x the stake, and then you start your free spins. Wild multipliers are included, and they may go as high as 5x. To retrigger this feature, you need 3+ scatters, and you get 5 or more free spins in exchange.
North American wildlife has often provided slot machine developers with symbols and beautiful background images, and that’s what we’re seeing in Buffalo King Megaways as well. Pragmatic Play chose a mix of fairly boring Royals in the base symbols and then went for icons showing mountains, buffalo, eagles, cougars, wolves, and elk. It’s OK for a game of this type, but we’ve definitely seen better-looking slots as well.
Buffalo King Megaways improves on the engine in some ways, mostly by adding more symbols and ways to win, but then it also reduces the payouts which can come from that huge game area. It’s OK to try out, but what people want from Megaways games, is big potential, and this one doesn’t deliver.
