We’ve been to San Quentin prison in one of Nolimit City’s previous slots, and now we’re seeing another release in the series, with Folsom Prison. It looks like they’re planning to make the rounds through the US penal system, and for as long as these games remain popular, I expect they will take advantage of it. Given how fun the first game was, there were high expectations for this one as well, and I’m happy to report that it got a lot of attention from its developers.
Folsom Prison gets the usual 5 reels, but it doesn’t use them quite the same way as other slots, so you end up with anywhere between 16 and 46,664 ways to win. The potential of this game is extremely high, reaching 75,000x the stake at best. At the same time, expect it to be highly volatile, but fair, as the 96.07% RTP proves. Several features were added to it, and I’d like to mention its wilds and scatters, along with features like The Chair or Walk The Line Spins, the Cockroach modifier, xWays, or the xSplit.
You have a bit of freedom when it comes to the wager selection, but you still need to choose from the values that the developer decided on. In total, there are 25 bet values, with a minimum of $0.20 and a maximum of $100.
An extra wager, the Toast Bet, costs you 20% more but it guarantees the presence of a scatter on the 2nd reel.
One of the big strengths of this slot machine, and we’ve seen it in other Nolimit City titles as well, is the size of the top jackpot that it can deliver. It’s not a payout that you see too often, but some players may get the 75,000x top jackpot, and that’s an impressive amount to claim in any slot, even a highly volatile one.
The RTP values go up to 96.07%, but there are versions of it that are not OK to play, due to the very low odds that they’re giving you.
Even though only 4x2 symbols and a total of 16 ways to win are available at the start of each round, there are additional symbol positions that can be unlocked and even a 5th reel. If everything gets maxed out, you could end up with 46,664 ways to win available from 4-6-6-6-4 symbols. To unlock new positions, you need to get xWays, xSplit, scatter, or wild symbols to appear. The reel they land on will unlock both positions from the top and bottom.
An xWays symbol counts as 2 to 4 regular symbols of the same type, all in the same position. This adds extra ways to win the round. At the same time, symbols will be unlocked both at the top and bottom of the reel.
As for xSplit, this one appears in the middle of the reels 2-5. It affects the row it lands on, splitting all symbols in two, and thus doubling the number of positions. More ways to win result from this.
There are two versions of the wild symbol. The regular wild appears on reels 2-5, while the Cockroach Nest can show up on all reels. Either way, they’re acting as substitutes for every type of regular symbol.
The Cockroach is a walking wild, which moves away from its initial position, or its nest. It applies a multiplier to symbols that it moves to.
The game can place scatter symbols in the middle two positions, and on reels 2-5, at least for the base game. With two of these scatters present at the same time, you unlock the 5th reel and its middle 2 positions. These turn into one of the other feature symbols next.
If you happen to get either 3 or 4 of those same scatters, you access one of the other features, the options being Walk the Line and The Chair, respectively.
Walk the Line requires 3 scatters, and it gives you 8 free spins. Additional spins are obtained if you get xSplits to target scatters. In this mode, the game area has 5 reels (2-4-4-4-2 symbols), along with 1+ guaranteed Cockroach Wilds. Land an extra scatter, and you upgrade the feature to The Chair.
The Chair is the version that you get when 4 scatters are present. You get 8+ free spins once again, but this time the game area has 4 symbols for all 5 reels, and there are at least 3 Cockroach wilds present each round.
The Cockroach Nest is added for the free spins. Get a Cockroach to land on it, and its multiplier will be upgraded each time. It goes up to 10x.
Folsom Prison is obviously going to get its inspiration from a prison located in California, well known in the United States. It’s not a typical choice for a slot machine’s story, but Nolimit City doesn’t let that stop them. The five initial symbols are showing Royals, from a 10 to an A. We then see images of five inmates, where a top symbol is a man that has the word CASH as a tattoo on his forehead. Since Johnny Cash released an album called “At Folsom Prison” back in 1968, there might be a connection between the two.
Folsom Prison is the usual highly volatile slot machine, with huge rewards and a very long list of features, same as a lot of other releases from Nolimit City. If you don’t mind the volatility, then I’d recommend you check it out.
