Lightning Gems is a NextGen Gaming new release, a game where the developer chose to use a gemstone inspired theme. The graphics show it, and include plenty of precious stones on the reels, and still I found it to be a pretty well designed title, something which I don’t expect from slot machines that have this particular topic. It’s not a game with a lot of lines, just 10 used on 5x3 reels.
The game will offer you a change to trigger free spins through the scatters, to get help from wild symbols, or to trigger random wild features. For the biggest payout available, you can count on a prize of $20,000.
The game is going to form its combinations by starting from either side of the screen, using just 10 active lines. Due to the fact that its symbols can start from the right, not just from the left, you are asked to use wagers as if you had 15 lines, even though only 10 are available. You can set only the coin or line bet value, in the range of $0.01 to $10. The complete betting range of this slot will be from $0.15 to $150.
When it comes to the big payout, the one that gets you the largest amount is the scatter symbol, offering up to 2,000 coins, so at most $20,000. The next best payout is the one coming from the wild, but it’s valued at only a quarter of what the scatter can pay.
One of the more basic features that you will get inside will be the wild, the symbol that is so common in slots that I doubt it holds any mystery for a long time player. The wild symbol may form combinations by itself, just like a regular symbol, paying as much as 500 coins based on how many contribute. The name of the feature comes from its joker like ability, to take the place of other symbols when this results in a new win for you. It will not be helpful when it comes to the scatter symbol.
Next, we have scatter symbols, showing crystals that appear to be surrounded by broken stone rings. These pay the most, and you don’t even need them to be on certain lines or positions. As long as you have between 3 and 5 symbols with this ability, the game will reward you with prizes and will also trigger 10 free spins. You get 10 additional wild symbols for each reel, so in total there are 50 extra wilds to help you out during free spins. You can also retrigger free spins, with the same 3+ scatters.
The random features are not missing from this game either, and they’re called Wild Wins and Wild Nudge. The former will get you randomly placed wilds for the reels, while the latter will nudge wild symbols into position if they’re just outside a line where they could do some good.
The theme is simple enough, inspired by gemstones, a topic that I’ve seen many times before, especially in older or more dated looking slot machines. That’s not really the case here though, and for the most part I found myself enjoying the look of Lightning Gems. The background picture shows a storm like formation of clouds gathering over a stony landscape. The reels are mostly occupied by those gemstones, some coming in classic shapes, others being turned into card suits.
Lightning Gems is a slot that was well designed, and I think that it’s going to be enjoyable for most players, despite the use of a gemstone theme that typically doesn’t signal a great game.
