Merkur’s latest release, Fountain of Fortune, is a game that’s borrowing heavily from the royalty of Europe, using gold everywhere when possible, from the jewelry that the main characters wear, to the gold plated objects and furniture in the background. It manages to look royal in appearance, even though there is that overabundance of gold in its design, and overall I’d say it’s playable, it doesn’t end up being too obnoxious.
Fountain of Fortune was designed to offer 243 ways to win on 5x3 reels, an increasingly common type of setup in modern games. It’s a slot which will pay quite well, up to 10x the stake per line, and up to 2,430x total, and that’s just from the base game’s potential. The slot is announced as a release with medium volatility, which has a 96.07% RTP. From the Queen Expanding Wild, to the Prince scatter, or the free spins with sticky wilds, I’ve found a good mix of special features inside.
All you have to do is click on the Bet button, to open up a small menu with all the wager values which are possible. The range is big, from $1 to $200, even though there are only a couple of options to choose from.
The payouts of Fountain of Fortune are going to come from the regular winning combinations, each one offering as much as 10x the stake. Given the number of ways to win, the potential appears to go as high as 2,430x the stake for a single spin.
I would mention the RTP as well here, with a 96.07% announced, a level that I’d consider adequate for a slot machine, but not particularly high.
You do get a couple of decent features in Fountain of Fortune, and even though they’re not very advanced or unique, they do their job at keeping you on your toes.
First, there is the Queen Wild, which is an expanding symbol on the reels 2, 3 and 4. Landing somewhere on those reels will get it to expand and take over the entire column and the three positions will then be turned into wilds. This is a substitute symbol, nothing more.
Via scatters that have the image of the Prince, which need to land 3, 4 or 5 times, the game will give you access to 5, 10 or 15 free spins. Should any wild symbol appear in view at any point, it is transformed into a sticky symbol, which remains in its position for a respin. Additional wilds that appear then will also be sticky for any respins that will follow.
The final feature comes in the form of a bonus symbol, which can only show up during paid spins. It’s stacked, and so it can cover the reel 3 entirely, if you’re lucky. Getting it to do that will bring along a multiplier, to be applied to the round’s bet, as a prize.
Fountain of Fortune has rich graphics and it’s well made, I will give it that, even as I’m not particularly interested in the sheer amount of gold being used for its design. The action takes place in a palace, and the symbols will mostly reflect the luxury that is associated with the nobility and royalty of Europe.
The symbols are all using gold as much as possible in their design, even the ones with the Wild Queen, the Prince Scatter, Diamond Bonus, or the regulars that have gold coins, crowns, thrones, carriages, Faberge eggs or the 9 to A Royals.
Fountain of Fortune looks like a game that some will appreciate, but it doesn’t quite manage to capture the imagination. It doesn’t have bigger top jackpots or higher RTP than most, it doesn’t innovate when it comes to features, so perhaps it’s just the graphics that are supposed to make it stand out. Either way, not a bad game, just not a great one.
