Quite the typical Eastern themed slot machine in a way, this Merkur title does manage to get the player’s attention, and it does it with its features. Eastern Lights is not going to rely on the same features as most of the other games of this type, but its graphics do have a bit of a dated look to them, and I’m not sure if it’s intentional and meant to be looking like all its symbols were hand painted.
Either way, you end up with a slot machine that uses 5x3 reels and has 20 active paylines. It’s going to have a Return to Player which is set to 96.05%, offering wins of up to 600x the stake ($24,000). The features, which are quite special for a slot of this type, will include Colossal Wilds, Bonus scatters, along with a Magical Lamps Bonus.
You’re setting up the bet for all lines involved, so there are always 20 coins included in the wager. You pick the total amount which goes to the slot’s spins, anywhere between $0.20 and $40. Up to $2 can be wagered per line then, but the starting point is at only $0.01. It should be quite accessible to any player, as most Merkur slots tend to be.
You don’t get the biggest payouts around, when you’re playing Eastern Lights, as its best combinations are worth 30x the stake each. The potential for a single spin, when the top symbol forms combinations on all lines, is at 600x the stake ($24,000).
With plenty of help from the Colossal Wilds, Eastern Lights manages to keep the RTP in check, and at a level that’s considered acceptable for a slot machine, of 96.05%.
One of the most fun things to note about this game, is the fact that its wins are incredibly easy to form, at least compared with other slots. You don’t need the symbols landing only left to right on a line. They can also appear in consecutive order in the middle of the reel, or covering the right side only. Either way, get 3+ symbols together on a line, and you get paid.
The most fun feature of all, the Colossal Wild is not one that I expect to find in most slots of this type. It’s landing in blocks which are sized at 2x2, giving you 4 wilds at a time. These can show up on the first two reels, last two reels, or both. The image, in each of the four symbols shown, will be that of two decorative fish.
Via Bonus symbols, the ones with the woman holding a lamp, you can get access to a bonus game called Magical Lamps. The required scatters have to appear on reels 1, 3 and 5, at the same time. There will be three levels/stages here, and at each one you have to make a pick (one of two lamps shown). Each of the three levels brings another prize.
Eastern Lights has a fairly typical Chinese theme, one which is not a surprise these days. There are quite a few like it, at least in terms of what it chooses to show us. The actual design style seems different though, perhaps a bit on the dated side, but with a quality to it, which makes it look like its symbols were hand- painted. The symbols range from decorative fish, to women holding paper lanterns, dragons, temples, Phoenix birds, lotus flowers, paper lanterns and a half dozen Royals, intricately drawn and decorated.
It’s a game that’s simple in some ways, but also unique in others, and with some interesting features to go with the more basic ones.
