Extreme Fishing, a new Lightning Box release, is not quite the slot machine that you might want if you’re a fan of quiet fishing, the sort of thing you’d do on a nice mountain river, where you’re looking for trout while recharging your batteries. On the contrary, it’s going to take you on the stormy ocean, where you’re fishing for sharks and big fish, an experience filled with adrenaline and danger, and hopefully with some good top jackpots as well.
Layout wise, it’s a game with 5x3 reels, has the usual 25 paylines, and it forms its combinations with 2-3+ matching symbols that appear on consecutive reels, and on the available lines. It has its mix of features, ranging from Wild Sharks, to scatters, up to 30 free spins, a Fishing Feature, or a Shark Attack random bonus, so there is a decent list of things that you can experience inside. Payouts appear to get up to 1,500x the stake, in a slot whose RTP is set to a slightly below average 95.84%.
Use the button with the stacked coins, and a new screen will open up, where you can select the total bet for the upcoming spin. The range is good enough there, between $0.25 and $150, which allows for up to $6 wagers per line.
1,500 coins is the most that a single active line can pay, and that’s the result of having only wild symbols present on one. Get a screen full of such symbols, for a jackpot of up to 1,500x the stake. Not the biggest around, but good enough for the most part.
If there is one thing that I’m slightly annoyed with, is that the RTP isn’t better, as the 95.84% that has been announced is close to the average, but doesn’t quite manage to get there.
First, let’s take a look at the symbol which can trigger the top jackpot, a Wild Shark. This symbol forms its own wins when 2 to 5 appear connected on a line, from left to right. Besides being able to pay you, it also helps with smaller wins, since it acts as a substitute in other regular combos.
The symbol with the Fisherman, marked as a Bonus, will be your scatter. It also pays well, up to 500x the stake for five symbols, but it’s also used to trigger 10, 20 or 30 free spins (for 3 to 5 symbols).
To get the Fishing Feature, you will need to land five Swordfish icons, while in the free spins mode. It’s a bonus game that gives you 15 chances to catch a fish. With each Swordfish that appears, you get arrow to move up and to add to the value of the fish. If you get the broken line icon (red), you take the arrow down by one position. Get the arrow to point to the Green Fish, to get the prize.
One more feature, the Shark Attack, will trigger at random for you, during any spin. It transforms the high value fish symbols into extra wilds, for that one round.
It’s quite obvious, but the slot machine will be dedicated to extreme marine fishing, and it will reflect that through its background image and symbols. The ocean, near a coastline though, is shown in the background. The reels will feature images of a fisherman, of several types of fish, crabs, but also of Wild Sharks, Bonus Fisherman and several Royals. Not the most modern looking release around, but it will do.
Extreme Fishing will give the player a decent variety of features, good rewards and a theme that should have its own fans from the fishing community. On the other hand, its RTP is lower than I’d like, and none of its features feel truly unique or innovative. I’m not that big of a fan of the graphics either, as they look a bit dated.
