Inspired once again by Nepal, Katmandu X is the sequel to Katmandu Gold. Both are slot machines from ELK Studios, with stunning graphics and an interesting story that nobody else approached, which is just what you’d want in terms of originality.
Katmandu X has a setup with 6x6 reels that uses Cluster Pays to form its combinations (clusters). The rewards are excellent, up to 25,000x the stake, but volatility is high, and the RTP only goes to 95%, so it’s not all great. You can get a variety of features inside, such as the wilds, with their splits and merge mechanics, or the Wild Strikes, Big Symbols, Progressive Multipliers, and free spins.
The standard betting settings apply in this ELK Studios slot, so once again, we’re using 100 coins to place bets between $0.20 and $100.
The rewards are very good, even better than I’ve come to expect from this developer. They will pay up to 25,000x the stake, which is excellent, even if the volatility rating needs to be high as a result. They even increased the RTP a little bit, from the 94% we’ve seen lately to a more manageable 95%.
With 36 symbols visible on 6x6 reels, Katmandu X allows for clusters of winning symbols to form whenever at least 5 are adjacent, horizontally, and/or vertically. For the best wins available, you need 16+ symbols in a cluster.
Forming a cluster is the first step. The winning symbols are removed from the reels, and in one of the remaining positions, there will be a wild symbol added. As you go through drops, a progressive multiplier increases its value, and further wins are improved.
Wild symbols are relied upon to act as substitutes, so they can contribute to any adjacent clusters. Wild Strikes can add various types of wilds to the reels, replacing regular symbols.
Wilds that are part of multiple clusters have multipliers, and they will go through a Wild Split, so they can contribute to all clusters. There is also a Wild Merge, where several wilds that are part of the same cluster will be merged into a multiplier wild.
Exploding Wilds can also show up, and they remove symbols around them so that a drop can result.
You can also get Big Symbols on the reels, taking over up to 4x4 positions.
The main feature consists of free spins and super free spins, which you get through a combination of scatters. A progressive multiplier is available and will only go up.
The inspiration for the Katmandu X demo game comes from the mountains of Nepal. We see a variety of symbols that represents the different elements, but there are also golden icons showing Asian dragons, Phoenix birds, tigers, or turtles.
Overall, it’s an excellent release from ELK Studios, but while they improved the RTP and brought it back to 95%, I still miss the good old days when all their slots were at 96%. If you can get past the 95% RTP, it’s a good game.
