With a title like South of the Border, the theme for this game is an obvious one, especially for someone from the US. It’s a Mexico-themed slot machine, which was designed by Ainsworth, an Australian developer. You will discover many of the expected graphics inside, but there will also be elements like the fixed jackpots or the excellent RTP and low volatility, to make it an interesting title.
South of the Border has 5x3 reels and will give the player 25 active lines. It’s a slot with fixed jackpots of up to $30,000 (Grand Jackpot), low volatility, and a 96.50% RTP. As for the interesting features that the game has implemented, you get the wild symbol, a scatter, free spins, and a Loot Feature.
The bet is selected directly, and you’re only changing the total amount for the spin when you do it. The range offered is between $1 and $40, and the game will have 25 active lines, regardless of the amount you use.
The payouts are not great in South of the Border, but as a slot machine whose volatility is considered Low, this shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Up to 150x the stake is apparently available when the game forms regular combinations, though the Grand Jackpot will have a fixed value of $30,000, which is quite a bit more.
Ultimately, I always follow the RTP of the game as well, since it tells us something about the player’s chances, even if this is only relevant for the game’s entire life. At 96.50%, South of the Border does very well at returning some of the wagers placed inside.
One feature that you get inside, and which is fairly common and yet very useful, the wild symbol will show up as the Mexican Man. It’s used as a substitute, and only for regular symbols. Reels 2, 3, 4, and 5 are the ones where they can appear.
Next, there is the scatter, which shows a blend between the Sun and the Moon, two sides of the same character but blended into one. It pays up to 100x the stake by landing up to five times in view.
Sun symbols are other scatters that you can get. Have 5+ appear, and besides the fact that there are prizes associated with them, they also trigger 4 free spins and the Loaded with Loot bonus. You collect these symbols into a special meter, and you win the Grand Bonus when 10 are obtained in total. There is also the possibility to add more free spins, via special symbols that appear in view.
It’s a Mexico-inspired theme, which is not that special these days. A lot of other games are relying on a similar theme, but few manage to actually turn it into something charming. I’d say that South of the Border manages that, and I found the cute cartoon graphics and symbols to be quite enjoyable. The symbols include the Sun/Moon mix, the Sun, Mexican Man, Cactus, Chili Sauce, Margarita, Pinata, and the orange/yellow Royals.
South of the Border has some decent features and mostly low volatility, so it’s the type of experience that is typically enjoyed by casual players.
