Krakatoa is a brand new Ainsworth release, and the slot machine features the obvious volcano inspired graphics that come to mind when thinking of that name. In case you’ve never heard of it, the name Krakatoa comes from a famous Indonesian volcano, which during its last eruption in 1883 destroyed 70% of its island and the surrounding archipelago.
Sporting a famous name, Krakatoa will do plenty of things to stand out on its own merits as well. It’s a high volatility release, which nonetheless has a 96.43% RTP that I like to see, along with top payouts ranging from fixed jackpots of $15,000, to its own rewards of up to $21,600. On a decent-looking list of features, Krakatoa introduces us to wilds (regular and stacked), scatters, free spins and multipliers.
You are about to wager on 30 active lines, and the game will require the use of bets between $0.90 and $36, for each round. You select the total amount, but there is no direct control over how much the game will send to each line. It looks like a wager between $0.03 and $1.20 per line though.
As for the rewards that may come your way, one of them will come via the slot’s winning combinations, ideally during the free spins and with a 3rd reel multiplier wild assisting. That way, a top win of $7,200 turns into a payout of up to $21,600, in a best case scenario.
The alternative is to trigger one of the fixed jackpots of Krakatoa, those coming in five variants, the highest of which is the Grand ($15,000).
RTP wise, the game is looking good, promising a return of 96.43%, which is what’s expected of most new releases. The High volatility announced for it is not as welcomed, particularly since the top payouts appear to be on the low side.
Though wild symbols are included, the game has them appearing only on the last three reels in the base game. You use those as substitutes, the usual ones which don’t work with scatters.
Lucky Break is the bonus feature, which triggers via its own bonus symbols. 6+ of those scattered is all that’s needed. The game will spin multiple times, trying to get you symbols with prizes of up to 200x, or which trigger one of the fixed jackpots. Additional spins in this bonus feature can also be obtained, by landing appropriate symbols (+1, +2 or +3 Free Games).
The Free Games scatter needs to appear 6+ times at the same time, in order for you to win access to the free spins. One free spin is offered for each triggering scatter. Once you get inside, there will be wild symbols on the last four reels, and multiplier wilds on the 3rd reel (2x or 3x random multiplier applied).
Featuring a volcano themed design, Krakatoa will have an image of an island that’s overrun by lava in the background. Moving back to the reels, we find images with a couple of logos, Toucans, Lizards, Buildings, the local god and multiple Royals. It’s not the best design around, mostly the same type of look that you can find in other Ainsworth titles. Not even the background image does better in this particular case. At best, I’d call it an average design, though that might be a bit of a stretch.
Krakatoa does have a couple of good features, and the RTP is at the right level, but the combination of low top payouts (600x), high volatility and boring graphics takes away a lot from it.
