About 5 years after 50 Dolphins was released, Ainsworth comes up with a new game using this particular theme, and it’s called Dolphins, so clearly they’ve scaled back a bit. You get about the same graphics as you would’ve had a couple of years back, so the game hasn’t evolved much here. Let’s see what else it has to offer though.
What they decided to do in Dolphins is use 5 reels with a total of 30 paylines active for them. You will get your chance at a jackpot of $48,000, but don’t expect a high RTP, the one offered being set to 94.3%. The features don’t help that much either, since you get only wilds, scatters and free spins, so a very common mix of options.
With 30 active lines which need covering, your wagers will start from $1.20 and will reach a top value of $48. This seems to give us a coin/line bet value of $0.04 to $1.60.
Rewards in this game will get you paid at most 1,000x the line bet per line, or 1,000x the stake if you get wilds and high paying symbols in all positions on the reels. You could get away with a jackpot of $48,000, in the best case scenario.
A figure that gives us an idea of how good the game performs, the RTP is at only 94.3%, well below the average numbers we see in modern slot machines. What this tells us is that the casino’s edge is a bit too high in this game, compared with what is offered in other slots (4% or lower in the best games, while Dolphins has it at 5.7%).
Another element to consider is the volatility of the game, which is announced as Medium by Ainsworth. This should give you decent sized rewards, and you’re not going to grow old waiting for them to come around.
This is not one of those games where we see a lot of modern features. On the contrary, we count on wilds and scatters to provide us with all the excitement.
For starters, you will be seeing wild Dolphins appear in the game. They act as substitutes, and they may replace regular symbols only. As a big downside, the wild is only added to the last three reels, so forming combos out of wilds alone is not an option.
Second, we have scatters on all reels, as Coins. These appear anywhere, and should you get 3+ in view, the slot will offer you 10 free spins. One of the things that change is the wild’s presence, which is now found on the middle three reels. 5 additional free spins can be triggered, via the same 3+ Coins scattered around.
It’s an average looking design, that much you can figure out as soon as the game loads up. The marine theme helps it a bit, as it usually does with all slots which approach it, but it doesn’t perform miracles. The designers still need to do their job, and here they’ve just created a slot which would look OK on a casino floor, but not online. Royals are present in the game, and they’re accompanied by various images of shells, pearls, fish, treasure chests, sail ships, gold coins and dolphins.
An average looking game, with medium volatility, low RTP and simple features, Dolphins offers little overall and is not the type of game that will keep you coming back.
