The king of the jungle is a great ape in Congo King: Quad Shot, a new Ainsworth slot machine. Modern, with good graphics and a couple of features that should be interesting enough, it nonetheless fails in one major way, in delivering a proper Return to Player. As it doesn’t give good enough odds, it’s going to be ignored by anyone that takes the time to check out how well it does there.
Congo King is a game with 5x3 reels, using up to 100 active lines, and allowing for potential wins of up to 2,000x the stake. That might sound good at first, but as this is a game with high volatility and disappointing RTP (94.39%), it loses that particular advantage. Its main features range from the Congo King Wilds to the Logo scatters, Quad Shot Bonus, and the Bonus Reel.
Provided that you chose to have all lines active (you can take them down from 100 to 20), the wager allowed will range from $4 to $80 per spin. You can go as low as $1 per spin if you choose the lower setting for the number of lines.
Payouts can be very good, but only during the Bonus Reels feature, where the wild gains the ability to form combinations directly. It pays up to 20x the stake on each line, so up to 2,000x the stake for a full screen. Otherwise, regular combinations pay at most 3x the stake per line, or 300x total. Fixed jackpots of up to $8,000 can also be triggered as you play.
It’s a game that combines high volatility with a below-average Return to Player, set to only 94.39%. Not happy about that one, and I doubt many will give it a chance if they know how much it pays back on average.
During paid spins, the Ape Wild symbols are shown only on the last three reels. From there, they can assist as substitutes, so they need matching symbols landing on their line before they can do anything for you.
With the Congo King game logo scattered on the reels, three or more of them needed, you can trigger 15 spins with the Bonus Reel active. This new bonus reel appears and can deliver multiplier symbols or additional scatters. Having one of the multiplier symbols appear, will boost the win for that round by 3x or 5x.
The wild changes now, and can appear on all five reels, so it forms its own combinations. It will not replace multipliers, but it works for all others. Get a combo of 3+ extra wilds or scatters, to retrigger the feature with 5 more rounds.
Quad Shot is a feature that can bring you one of the fixed jackpots mentioned at the top (up to $8,000). For the Major Bonus, you need a 5-symbol combo of high-paying icons to form, with no substitutes helping out, and with the Quad Shot Bonus mark on a symbol. If wilds do help, you get the Minor Bonus instead. If the Royals are the ones forming a combo with no wilds, then you get the Maxi Bonus. Mini is offered for Royals forming a 5-symbol combo with the wild assisting.
It’s a game of adventure, with a beautiful young woman in the role of the archaeologist that’s going deep within the jungle. Besides the redhead taking the main role, we have jaguars, rubies, jeeps, and ancient temples, for the top symbols. The Ape and the Logo are the feature symbols. At the same time, we have a list of low-value icons, with Royals showing up in all of them.
I wouldn’t typically associate Ainsworth with great designs, but they’ve done a decent enough job here. We’re looking at the jungle in the background, and at a decent mix of symbols on the reels. Of course, I’m talking only about the themed symbols, the Royals don’t provide anything of value to the design.
Congo King is an interesting free slot, I will give it that, but due to its very low RTP, I wouldn’t recommend that you actually play it, not in the long run. It might work if you just want to satisfy your curiosity.
