Book of Merlin is not the most original game that 1X2gaming could’ve started 2020 with, since it’s a Book of Ra clone, one more release in this already popular category. You do get a theme that’s not coming from Egypt, but that’s not as rare as it used to be, so even with the decent graphics, I still would’ve preferred to have seen some innovation here.
It’s a game with a 5,000x top payout, which will be coming from the slot’s 5x3 reels, spinning to form combinations on 10 paylines. While the payouts appear capable of going as high as $250,000, the RTP of 95.80% is lower than what competitors with identical mechanics are giving you, taking away a big potential reason to give it a chance. Otherwise, in terms of features they’ve relied on wilds/scatters, free spins and special expanding symbols, so pretty much the classic recipe of a Book-style game.
With the line bet automatically going from $0.01 to $5, the total bet available for each round is going to be anywhere from $0.10 to $50.
Now, payout wise, you get up to 5,000 coins on each of the lines that end up covered by the Merlin symbols. The wild symbols do get to help when they appear, but in the free spins you can more easily form all 10 combinations by getting the Merlin symbol to be special for the feature. The cash value of the top jackpot could be even as high as $250,000.
What I enjoyed a lot less, the RTP of 95.80% is at a level that’s below the average. It’s not a great place to be, for a slot machine that’s in a category which typically has the Return higher than 96%.
You don’t get any unique special features from Book of Merlin. The game is based on a long-line of clones which take after a very popular land-based slot machine, called Book of Ra, from Novomatic. An entire series has been released by Novomatic, with games that are using those mechanics, and there are dozens of clones from their competitors as well, doing pretty much the same thing.
The Book-style games will have mixed feature symbols, a Book of Merlin in this case, acting as both wild and scatter.
As a wild, this symbol will help create all types of regular combinations, just by being on the right line, next to matching regular symbols.
As a scatter, it pays whenever it appears in three or more random locations, and at the same time it triggers 10 free spins.
Once the free spins trigger, the Book picks a special symbol, giving a regular icon this ability. That symbol will be able to expand and cover its reel, whenever it appears during free spins. Get five of them on just as many reels, and you end up with all 5 reels covered by matching symbols. This is the way to get to the top jackpot, and the reason why the Book-style games are so popular.
You will be playing a magic/fantasy themed game, inspired by one of the most popular wizards of all times, Merlin himself. We’re looking at a game where the Book plays a major role, while other symbols have the Staff, Pendant, Potion and multiple Royals of much less value and excitement.
Book of Merlin looks decent enough, doesn’t have the usual Egyptian theme of other Book-style slots, but it doesn’t offer us anything new, while the RTP is lower than what the competitors are giving us. Overall, I don’t see any reason to try out this one, over another modern Book game, with better RTP.
