Gremlins: Time To Tumble is the second slot machine from Scientific Games, to be inspired by the 1984 movie. It’s a branded release, so we’re seeing images of the little monsters next to the reels and in some of the symbols. It does look like an 80s kind of game, based on how the symbols and decorations were crafted, and that’s not a bad thing since it tries to reach players that enjoyed the original movie. The first game of the series came out in 2020, and just one year later, Scientific Games is already launching its sequel.
You have 5x3 reels to play on, but Gremlins: Time To Tumble will not give you any lines or ways to win. Instead, it’s a system where all symbols pay as scatters. The potential is not very high, only up to 1,666x the stake, and one reason for that is the fact that the RTP is at only 95%. A jackpot of 1,666x the stake is the best that the game will do, meaning that you can expect prizes of up to $50,000 in a single spin. Volatility being medium to high, and the RTP at a low 95%, I’m not satisfied with the way the math works out, or with the top jackpot that’s being promised.
One of the most unusual things about this slot, is its ability to form combinations just by having enough matching symbols somewhere in view. You need 3 or more of these symbols, that match, but it doesn’t matter where exactly they land on the reels.
Following the formation of a combo, the game triggers the Cascading Wins mechanic, and removes the symbols that got you paid already. There are new symbols which drop down to occupy the available positions, which could lead to additional wins. An increasing multiplier is available, starting from the second cascade, and it goes up by 1x, until it hits 4x at the fourth cascade.
From the fifth cascade going forward, you’re getting access to the free spins as well. Once the round is over, you start the free spins feature. You get 5 to 7 rounds, if you had 5 to 7 cascades triggered that round.
Gizmo, the Gremlin that’s marked with the Bonus logo, is shown in a symbol that can be collected. Each time this happens, the bet value of that round is added to a Wheel Bonus Pot. Once you have 10 of these Gizmo symbols collected, you activate the Wheel Bonus feature.
The Wheel will spin to reveal a multiplier of up to 50x, to be used on the Pot that you accumulated. There is also a chance that you will not get anything from it, it’s not a guaranteed pay. The option to Spin Again is also a possibility, and in that case wins will be between 2x and 100x the Pot.
One more feature is present, the Gizmo Box Hunt, triggered through 3 Box scatters. It’s a picking feature, with 9 boxes shown at each level, and a total of 4 levels to advance through. You can either get a Level Up, cash prizes, or the Collect message (ending the feature).
It’s inspired by a movie that came out in 1984, and it shows it in its design, even though this is a 2021 slot online. It’s doing enough to scratch that nostalgia itch for some people, but it’s not considered a good-looking game by today’s standards.
As for what its symbols are, those range from pop corn, to gremlins, logos, 3D glasses, a boom box, cup cakes, ice cream, donuts, and cassettes.
Overall, I’d say that Gremlins: Time To Tumble is a fine successor to the other game, and it’s got some interesting mechanics. I would only recommend it to fans of the movie though, since the low RTP and limited potential make it a worse option than many others we get these days.
