Direct Hit sounds like it’s going to be a sequel for a slot that WMS launched in 2018, called Battleship: Direct Hit. Direct Hit: Featuring Money Zone is a type of slot machine that’s all about war, only this time it’s on land that the events are taking place. Hosting a large number of very well-designed symbols, some of their weapons camouflaged as fruits, it’s going to be available under the WMS brand, at casinos that have their content.
Direct Hit: Featuring Money Zone comes up with 7x7 reels and has a Cluster Pays system in place there. It’s not going to be the most generous game around, with rewards of 1,000x the stake being the ultimate target inside, while the RTP is set to 93.90%. A couple of good features are also implemented, and I’d mention here the cascades, wild symbols, the Money Zone, Care Packages, free spins, and Blue Super Spins/Red Free Spins.
Spending just $0.20, that’s all it takes to spin those 7 reels and allow for winning clusters to get you paid. At the highest end, a bet can allow for up to $100 to be spent on just one spin.
I’ve seen mentioned top prizes of only 1,000x the stake, but there is also mention of a $250,000 cap, so it’s possible that the slot will pay up to 2,500x (there is no mention of the return inside). While this would normally signal a type of gameplay that’s not volatile, in this case, we’re looking at a low RTP as well, of just 93.90%. The lower odds are probably the slot’s biggest disadvantage.
You’re looking at a slot machine that’s using 7x7 reels, so 49 symbols are visible each round. In order to get paid, you’re going to need at least 5 symbols to land grouped, touching either with a horizontal or vertical side. Clusters of 20+ symbols will be the ones paying the most.
Following a cluster’s creation, there will be a cascade triggered. The winning symbols explode and are replaced with new ones. Compared to other slots, there is a limit to the number of cascades you can trigger. While most offer an unlimited number of cascades, Direct Hit only has 10 of them for each round, if you can get that much.
The slot relies on the W shield for its wild. Use it to replace other symbols, making possible other clusters if it’s next to enough matching symbols. It will not replace a Gem.
I should also mention the Money Zone, which is a random-sized area, chosen to cover a number of symbols. Anywhere from 2x2 to 6x6 symbols can be part of the Money Zone. This Zone changes positions after each cascade or spin.
There is one more interesting mechanic that’s implemented, and it has a theme-related action. It revolves around Red or Blue Care Packages, which are parachuted in the game area. If one lands on a regular symbol, it will be turned into a wild. If it lands in the Money Zone, it will also turn into a wild, but it can also transform others into wilds within that game area.
Gems are symbols that come with the Care Packages, and they have either blue or red colors. Get 3 Gems, to trigger the free spins, in one of two versions. You either get the Blue Super Spins, or the Red Free Spins, depending on which type of gem was collected more.
Direct Hit: Featuring Money Zone has an army theme, rather than the navy one that we’ve seen in Battleship: Direct Hit. The thing is, it doesn’t look like the regular army, more like a bunch of amateurs playing at it. The reason why I’m saying this is the use of pink bunny-themed rocket launches or green apple-camouflaged grenades. There are also gold radar screens (top symbol), crossbows with rockets tied to arrows, walkie-talkies, and boxes.
The symbols may not be that realistic, but they look great. For a developer like WMS, I’d say it’s one of their best designs so far.
Direct Hit: Featuring Money Zone looks amazing, but the visuals don’t bring the player decent odds, and the RTP reflects that. If you can stand the low returns of the slot, I think that its features could prove interesting.
