You wouldn’t expect Play n GO to have anything else to say in the Book genre, but they keep chugging along and putting out new slots that use similar graphics and mechanics. Scales of Dead is their latest Book-style slot machine, with Ancient Egypt-themed graphics and some of the usual features. Luckily, they also add something extra to spice things up, a multiplier that can help take wins higher.
Scales of Dead delivers 10 paylines, using 5x3 reels for this. The slot’s top jackpot of 10,000x the stake is coupled with high volatility, but at least there is an RTP version at 96.21%. Besides the common Book wild/scatters, the free spins with special symbols will have a Sandstorm version that also brings in up to 4x multipliers.
You don’t need much to start playing this highly volatile slot, as little as $0.10 per spin. At the other end, wagers of up to $100 are available.
Scales of Dead certainly has the potential to pay well since its prizes are capped at 10,000x the stake. You do need to reach the Sandstorm Free Spins to get that far, but even the regular version will pay up to 5,000x (the most common jackpot for a Book slot).
Expect high volatility inside; it couldn’t have been any other way, but it can be a fair slot when you get the 96.21% RTP version. Several much lower RTP values are available for operators, though.
The base game’s most important symbol is the Golden Tomb, taking the role of the Book from other slots. You may use it as a substitute when appropriate, but it also triggers the free spins when landing 3+ times, so it’s not easy to get to appear.
You can get 8 free spins with a special symbol picked at random. The special symbol becomes capable of expanding on its reel whenever it’s present on 3+ reels. It forms combinations even if the reels it lands on aren’t adjacent. You get paid on 10 lines at a time, then.
If you get 2+ additional Golden Tombs to appear during the free spins, you get access to Sandstorm Free Spins. There are 3 rounds there, with 2x to 4x multipliers applied to the special symbol’s winning combinations. This is a feature that you can retrigger multiple times.
Scales of Dead isn’t the most inspiring slot machine around. The Ancient Egypt theme that’s in use is designed similarly to what we’ve seen hundreds of times already. The lower value symbols show us the typical mix of Royals. The rest give us images of the Golden Tomb, Cobras, Horus, Anubis, and the Ankh.
Scales of Dead demo has pros, especially the presence of the Sandstorm Free Spins, but you have to retrigger the free spins to reach that point. It’s obviously an extra step that’s much more difficult to get to, but it’s different from other Book slots and worth celebrating.
