Designed by Snowborn Games exclusively for Microgaming’s collection, Stellar Portals slot has an unusual design, but it makes up for it by using plenty of features and multipliers. It’s not quite as interesting as it might sound at first, thanks to its heavy use of various colored blobs on its reels, but luckily the higher value icons do look somewhat interesting, since those are the ones showing off portals in space.
As futuristic as the theme might sound, the game area is standard, with 5x3 reels and 20 paylines. Wins of up to 7,777x the stake will mark this as a high volatility option, a natural conclusion. That doesn’t stop the game from offering on average 96.04% (RTP) of what’s wagered back to its players. Several excellent features are present, such as regular and stacked wilds, several scatters, multipliers and free spins.
The bottom right area hosts a Bet button, which upon activation will open up a small menu for you, with bet values to choose from. With a range of $0.20 to $20 in place, line bets can reach a maximum of $1.
As for the payouts that could potentially come from Stellar Portals, the highest value available is 7,777x the stake. Not that difficult to believe, once you consider that regular or wild combinations pay up to 75x the stake each (1,500x for all lines covered), and that up to 10x multipliers can apply during free spins.
Big rewards tend to increase the volatility of a game, since they don’t just appear out of thin air. A lot of losing rounds need to happen, before a jackpot worth 7,777x the stake will trigger for some random player. That’s the nature of the beast though, and veterans which go after bigger payouts usually know what are the risks. RTP is good long-term, at 96.04%, even as the volatility is high, so the fairness of this slot is not disputed.
One of quite a few major features that have been implemented in Stellar Portals, the Sticky Wild is easy to spot, as its title is also the words on its logo. When you get these symbols, you may use them as replacements in new combinations, and they also form their own, paying as much as the jackpot symbol (75x the stake per full line).
At the same time, the Sticky Wilds will do what their name suggests, so they stick to the reels while the positions around them will re-spin. Once no new sticky wilds appear, the re-spins will stop.
There are also regular Wild symbols that can appear on the reels, and they work the same way when substituting or forming new combinations, without the respins that follow for the sticky versions.
If three Sticky Bonus Wilds are present on the reels at the same time, you get to trigger the Sticky Wild Bonus. Such symbols are going to show up only on the 1st, 3rd and 5th reels. You get 6 free spins at this point, with sticky wilds locked in their positions if they land.
Another scatter to watch out for, the Stacked Bonus Wild is also only present on the 1st, 3rd and 5th columns. All three together, will get you a free spins feature with 6 to 9 rounds. In this mode, all reels get stacked wilds on them.
Rising Multiplier Bonus is yet another bonus feature which you can trigger via special scatters, the ones with the bonus name logo, and once again on reels 1, 3 and 5. Multiplier Bonus is the final piece of the puzzle, a bonus which requires 5x Multiplier Bonus icons on the same three reels as the others. Up to 9 free spins will trigger, where a 5x multiplier is applied to any wins that form inside.
The idea of the Stellar Portals is one that holds promise, and I was expecting some kind of science fiction themed game at first. It’s stellar themed, I will give it that, but there is no real story being told there. Various connected blobs are part of the lower value list (1 blue, 2 green, 3 yellow and 4 red), while high value symbols do seem to offer images of some kind of stellar portals, colored in orange, yellow, green and blue, while featuring black holes in the middle. Obviously, there are a lot of scatters fighting to get a spot on the reels 1, 3 and 5, each type with a different feature to trigger.
Stellar Portals slot has an overabundance of features that could trigger, but the downside is that they all share the same three reels, and you need them to match if you want access. It makes it more difficult for any of those features to get the symbols it requires, but I’d say that overall the game is still plenty of fun. I love its potential as well, especially with all the different multipliers and sticky wilds that can help out.
