Microgaming’s partnership with independent studios has brought a lot of new games to the market within the last year, and now we’re looking at yet another of those slots, Retro Galaxy. This one’s developed by Half Pixel, and it’s looking like a solid option for those that are looking for titles with high volatility in Microgaming’s collection.
There is a bit of a retro feel to this game, that’s expected since even the title mentions it, but it will not come from its layout. A modern release in that regard, the game offers 5x3 reels along with 243 ways to win. With higher volatility than the typical Microgaming slot, it has a 96.05% RTP and an impressive top jackpot of up to 7,300x the stake. Whether it’s the multipliers, free spins, wilds or the Rolling Reels mechanic, when luck is on your side there are plenty of features that will help you get to that reward.
Betting and Prizes
You will be required to use 20 coins in the bets that are placed here, and as a result you’re working with a betting range of $0.20 to $20.
If there is one thing that will get the attention of players to focus on Retro Galaxy, then I’d imagine that the top jackpot would definitely be it. With a value of up to 7,300x the stake of that spin, it has the potential to reach a value of $146,000.
For that kind of return, you can’t have a game with low volatility, and Retro Galaxy doesn’t even try. It’s got high volatility, it can be risky, but that’s assumed by the players that give it a chance. RTP is 96.05%, which is fine, nothing to write home about.
Retro Galaxy Slot Features
First, expect for a bit of help from the slot’s Rolling Reels, a well known mechanic by now. Triggered every single time that a winning combination forms, it ends up removing the symbols which are a part of it, and then bringing others in. The Rolls keep coming, if wins continue to form.
As you go through the Rolling Reels, the Multiplier Trail will get a boost, and will reach a value of 5x for the third roll and the ones after. Once a spin is over, the multiplier resets back to 1x.
The usual wild symbols are also included in this game, and they will be part of any wins being formed on these reels. Since ways to win are the preferred method of forming combinations, the wilds do have an easier job here, compared with other newest slots.
Finally, you can get scatters to appear on the reels, and if that happens on at least three columns, you win 10 to 20 free spins. A cash prize is also awarded, and it’s based on the number of visible scatters.
What changes for the free games, is the value from the Multiplier Trail, which now has a range of 1x to 15x. It changes the same way, through Rolling Reels, but it no longer resets between rounds.
Theme & Design
It’s a type of retro futuristic design that developers seem to be using when they’re trying to show us the future, as seen through the eyes of people from the 80s. With neon-style symbols, and with a Tron-like virtual setting in the background, I don’t find it terribly interesting to play through, particularly since what we’re seeing is a mix of Royals and classic symbols. A future where Lucky 7s, Stars, Bar logos and Lightning Bolts are present, along with Royals between 10 and A, is not one that anyone would get excited about.
Retro Galaxy is a game with solid features, boring graphics and excellent potential, the kind of slot machine that veterans are going to find palatable, while casual players will balk at its volatility. It’s a welcomed addition to Microgaming’s line-up of slot machines.
On the other hand, I do have to mention the blandness of the developer’s choices. There is nothing that innovates here, and everything you get in this slot, you can find in others. Still, if you’re not looking for something unique to play, I think that 7,300x top jackpot is a great target to have, while playing a game with time-tested features.
