It seems like Microgaming is finally getting a couple of competitors in its slots category, for the Megaways slots that are so popular on other platforms, and they are doing it with Mayan Eagle. This is a release from their partner, All41 Studios, which has a South American theme that doesn’t feel all that original, but it mixes in some interesting gameplay and features, without making any claims at innovation.
Mayan Eagle offers 6x5 reels, along with 15,625 ways to win, or Nobleways as they call them. There is nothing original about those, you just form your wins, and there will be payouts of up to 13,000x the stake possible eventually. Count on those being hard to get though, and in fact this has been announced as a Very High volatility game. The features involved give us the wilds, scatters, mystery symbols, free spins and increasing multipliers, along with a Rolling Reels mechanic that should be fairly often available. RTP is 96.32%.
Betting and Prizes
You are spending a minimum of $0.20 per spin, in order to get the game and all its ways to win active. At the other end, you have bets of up to $20 per spin, that you can use.
When it comes to the rewards involved, I felt like Mayan Eagle did a pretty good job at giving the player a good target, with 13,000x the stake being the highest that they would go there. Though the game has Very High volatility, it also keeps the RTP at a respectable 96.32%.
Mayan Eagle Slot Features
The Nobleways system will feature ways to win, the usual kind, so I’m a bit confused over what’s the innovation there. They have 15,625 ways to win in this case, spread out over 6x5 reels, and combinations form with 3 or more matching symbols on reels going from left to right.
If wins do form, then the Rolling Reels mechanic triggers next, giving the player a shot at a second wave of combinations. It removes the winning symbols, and then lets others come in and replace them. This can continue for as long as wins keep coming.
The wild symbols show up only on the middle four columns (2-5), so while somewhat limited, they can still be of considerable help, especially as this is a slot with ways to win, where the symbol’s position on a reel is not important.
You can get a random Mystery feature at times, which adds 8+ symbols on the reels, all of them transforming into a single regular one. You will not get these during Rolling Reels though.
As for the free spins, they’re a bit difficult to trigger, but the potential there is very high. You need the scatter symbols forming the word MAYA, landing on the reels, with 12 or more rounds offered, depending on how many of them are actually visible. The extra here is the progressive multiplier, with 2x as a starting point, and going up by 1x each time that you get through the Rolling Reels.
Theme & Design
For some reason, it looks like a very tidy slot machine to me, a game with clean lines and just the right amount of detail in its design. I’m not terribly excited about a Mayan themed slot where the reels are filled with Royals and drawings of monsters and gold objects, it’s not telling us a story, but I can’t deny that I like the design at least.
Mayan Eagle should offer the player a high volatility option that is not always easy to find in Microgaming’s own collection of slots, and I did enjoy seeing the potential of this one.
