Following after a long series of slot machines which are offered under exclusivity for Microgaming’s platform, Aquatic Treasures does the same, and this time it’s Gold Coin Studios that is providing it. The developer’s decision was to give us a slot machine with a theme that builds on the idea of treasures that can be found on the ocean floor, something that other games have managed to bring to life successfully in the past. This slot doesn’t quite get there though, and I wouldn’t blame the theme for that, I think it’s mostly a matter of how everything was thought out and implemented. More on that, below.
First of all, once the game loads up, you will notice a setup with 5x3 reels, where there are 20 paylines in place. Expanding wilds, scatters, free spins, these are the main features that you get to use, a list that sounds OK, without being impressive in any way. With a game that has medium volatility, you’d expect better rewards, but Aquatic Treasures slot doesn’t do very well in this important area, paying at most 357x the stake for a single spin. Even so, it does keep the RTP where it should be, at 96.03%.
A full range for your bets is going to go from $0.20 to $100. As you’re forced to keep the 20 lines active at all times, what changes here is the coin denomination, or line bet if you will, between $0.01 and $5.
It’s not a game that has big potential, as you’re about to find out. 150X the stake of the round, that’s the best return that a single paid spin seems capable of offering, and that’s by getting combinations of purple gems on all 20 lines (with the help of expanding wilds, if necessary). The top jackpot which is mentioned, 357x the stake, is likely going to come only if you get the free spins or the gamble game involved as well.
The reason why I’m not loving that top prize, is because the slot is supposed to have medium volatility. This describes the amount of risk that the player takes in the short run, and how likely it is for him to lose a big portion of his budget. I would expect those low rewards to be coming in a slot with low volatility, but here I’d want a bigger target in front of me, to make up for the risk that’s taken.
RTP does seem fair though, at 96.03%, so I would blame the math model, not the developer’s intentions with this issue of the mismatched jackpot and volatility.
The features are fine, but they once again lack something that would make them attractive. You will find that the game delivers only common features, easy to get in other slots as well.
Expanding wilds are among those special features, and you will encounter these on the middle three columns, where they show up as Dolphins. They may merge, when expanding on reels which are adjacent, but that’s not going to bring you any extra abilities.
Next, we have the Pearl which has the two golden dolphins circling it. This one’s the scatter, which can trigger 8 free games by landing 3 to 5 times (you retrigger the feature in the same manner). A small cash prize, up to 25x the stake, is also paid at the time.
In free spins mode, you will get better chances of forming combinations, since the wilds are going to make more appearances, but that’s it, there are no other cool new features to explore.
As I’ve mentioned in the beginning, ocean themed slots have been around for a while now, and they have the potential to look stunning, when they’re properly designed. I wouldn’t say that it’s the case here though. Rather than show us the beauty and colorful creatures and plants of the ocean, all we’re seeing is dark water and barely visible fish silhouettes. Nothing attractive there, and unfortunately this applies to the symbols as well.
Speaking of symbols, the Dolphin is the wild, the Pearl is a scatter, and then you move on to three gemstones which are of high value, and to five Royals which pay less.
I think you will likely skip this one, or if you do give it a try, it’s not going to be for the long run. It doesn’t look like the type of game that would be anyone’s favorite, and that’s a big problem. Aquatic Treasures slot has basic graphics, average RTP, small payouts with medium risk, standard features that hundreds of other slots incorporate, and it’s all combined in one very boring package. Overall, it’s below average in every way.
