Mad Monsters Slot Machine Review

Leander Games are releasing a game for casual players in Mad Monsters, a slot machine which relies on a big game area and a monster themed design. It looks like one of those slots that could’ve been influenced by the movie Monsters, since the creatures we find on the reels are cute, even with the scary mix of features that they’re presenting.

Mad Monsters slot offers 7x7 reels, where you’re going to play with a Cluster Pays system, requiring 5+ grouped symbols to pay you. Wins are fairly low in this one, with up to 1,000 coins paid for its very best wins, but there should be more than enough features to keep it interesting. The result is that the game gets to a 95.73% RTP anyway, even with the lower cluster wins and high volatility. Each of the six top symbols have an associated Mad Feature (Smokey, Wild Willy, Nutty Niki, Psycho Sienna, Crazy Charlie and The Pumper), to which they also add the Wild.

Betting and Prizes

The wagers that you’re selecting, will include 25 coins, with denominations from $0.01 to $10. The total bet has a range of $0.25 to $250.

Wins of up to 1,000 coins are mentioned in the paytable, for which you need 20 or more matching symbols of the right type. That’s a win of up to 40x the stake, in exchange for almost half the screen covered with top symbols. You might be able to cram two of those clusters on the screen, and there are explosions to remove winning symbols and keep the wins coming, but even so, it looks like the payout doesn’t quite match the risk of a high volatility slot.

Nevertheless, as unusual as those mechanics might look like, you can still expect an adequate RTP, of 95.73%, which means that the features do have a big effect, once they do get triggered.

Mad Monsters Game Features

Getting paid requires 5+ matching Monster symbols, forming a cluster when they’re next to each other. The connection needs to be made horizontally or vertically, so diagonally doesn’t work.

Once a combo forms, the symbols involved will be removed, and new ones will land to potentially get you more clusters.

A bit of help can come from the Wild Monster, the golden one which can act as a substitute for all types of symbols, the exception being the bonus ones.

As you create clusters with the six monster symbols, you will collect Angry Juice in the meters associated with each one, shown on the left. Get one of the meters filled, to trigger the feature associated with it:

Smokey: activates explosions, which create 2x2 wild areas, and give you 8 free spins.
Wild Willy: the symbols with this monster will all transform into wilds, after which 10 free spins will trigger. The multiplier gets a boost with each new win cascade.
Nutty Niki: gives you free spins, where the Nutty Niki icons are going to turn themselves and their entire reel, into wilds.
Psycho Sienna: triggers 5 free spins, where this symbol is a power up multiplier.
Crazy Charlie: it involves 10 free spins, where the symbols in question get an increase in value.
The Pumper: this monster is now 3x3 sized, and will stay that way for the 8 free spins which will follow.

Theme & Design

It’s a cute looking monster themed slot machine, the way we’ve seen quite a few appear over the years. In different colors, some with 2 eyes and others with 4, with hair or fur, and other modifications, the monsters might’ve looked scary in other conditions. Besides the six monster symbols, which are also the ones contributing to the feature meters, there are also fruits on the reels (watermelons, oranges and cherries). The only other symbol in view will be the wild Monster.

I wouldn’t call it a high end design, but it looks good enough, cute and even a bit funny, so I’m sure it’s going to be enjoyable if everything else feels right.

Conclusion

It’s an unusual slot game, but it can work out for the players that are into cluster pays titles. I wasn’t a big fan of the low payout potential, especially with the game’s higher volatility, but the RTP does end up at a decent level, so it could still be enjoyable.
