Once again, we’re getting a chance to play through a game that’s inspired by King Arthur and his adventures. Crown of Avalon is a slot machine from Iron Dog Studio, which offers decent graphics and average rewards, along with what it seems to be higher volatility than you’d want. Ultimately, it puts on a decent show, and it delivers adequate features, so it’s not a bad entry into this fairly crowded category.
Crown of Avalon gives us 5x3 reels, and it has 10 active paylines there. Though with a volatility that’s on the high side, it pays up to 2,000x the stake, and at the same time it keeps the average RTP at 96%. Decent enough all things considered, particularly if we also take into account the game’s free spins, along with expanding wilds and scatters.
You can start very low when playing Crown of Avalon, as $0.10 is the minimum bet required. The other end is at $50, which is a bit closer to high roller territory, without actually getting there.
$100,000 appears to be the big payout possible in Crown of Avalon, a slot machine that has rewards of up to 2,000x the stake to offer. Volatility is high, so there is considerable risk involved, while the rewards aren’t as appealing as they should be for that kind of action.
Ultimately though, it matters the level of the RTP, which will be at the standard 96%, telling us that the game is about as fair as most of its competitors, despite its unappealing pairing of volatility/jackpot.
A couple of features were added to Crown of Avalon, with the expanding wild being the first that I’d like to mention. It’s going to feature Excalibur, King Arthur’s magic sword, and it ends up covering the full reel if it makes an appearance at the top of the column. Unfortunately, if it doesn’t land at the top, then it remains a regular-sized wild symbol. Either way, you get some help from it in forming new combinations, and it can form its own as well. In fact, to get a 2,000x jackpot, you need those expanding wilds taking over all reels and forming their own wins on the 10 lines (each one pays 200x the stake).
Next, let’s check out the scatter symbol, whose image is that of the Shield & Crown. These need to land in random locations, but on a minimum of 3 reels. If you get it on just 1 or 2 reels, it will be used as an additional wild.
In addition to 10 free spins, their appearance will also bring a reward worth up to 200x the stake. To retrigger the free spins, you need another 3 to 5 scatters landing on the reels, during the same round.
In a move that reminds of the Book of Ra inspired slots, the free spins are played with a special symbol, chosen at random from among the regular icons. That special symbol gains the ability to expand and take over its reels completely.
The story of King Arthur and the fantasy-like setting in which it’s often placed, is one that’s translated well into the design of this game. Crown of Avalon shows us Excalibur still in stone, as part of the green background image.
Moving back to the reels, as symbols we discover the Crown & Shield scatter, the Excalibur Wild, plus images of King Arthur, Guinevere, Merlin and Morgana. Low symbols still end up with the standard Royals (10 to A).
I like several things about Crown of Avalon slot, and I’m mostly speaking about the game’s features here and the expanding wilds and special symbols from the free spins. It makes life interesting, it’s just a shame that the top rewards possible in this game will not match those from other high volatility titles that rely on similar mechanics.
