Book of Madness Slot Machine Review

The Book of Ra style category is already a big one, but as most games which copy the Novomatic original tend to use the Ancient Egypt theme, it’s actually quite interesting to find a Gamomat's game like Book of Madness, where a horror story appears to be told, one involving plenty of blood and werewolves.

Book of Madness is a slot which offers only 10 lines on 5 reels, the usual simple layout that quite a few games are using, same as the original Book style game. The top wins look great, the best possible rounds delivering as much as 5,000x total stake back to the player, all in a single free spin. Otherwise, the features are the expected ones, with mixed wilds/scatter Books, free spins and special expanding symbols.

Betting and Prizes

The game allows for the selection of either 5 or 10 lines, and then you set up the bet. The minimum wager per spin is $0.10 per active line, so depending on the number of lines, you spend either $0.50 or $1, at the very least. From there, you can only go up, to significant values, possibly even up to $5,000 per spin.

The prizes are the ones that make this a slot with high volatility, since it’s not going to be easy to win a 5,000x reward. The very best winning combinations will offer 500x total stake, on each line which they fully cover.

Of note is also the game’s Return to Player, which is at a level that I’m happy with, of 96.15%. It could’ve been better, but I’m just happy it’s not worse.

Book of Madness Game Features

If you’ve played one Book style slot machine, chances are that you know what to expect from all the others as well. There aren’t that many things which will change, from one to the next.

For this game, we once again have the Book symbol acting as both a wild and a scatter.

As the wild symbol, you can make use of it even if it only appears once on an active line, provided that the other symbols in the combo are matching regulars. Should several wilds align themselves on the same line, they pay as much as the slot’s jackpot symbol, the one with the Nurse.

However, if you simply get 3 or more Book symbols on the reels, not aligned on the same line, then they’re counted as scatters, so you still win from them. They pay 2x to 200x the round’s stake as scatters, and then they give you access to 10 free spins.

Once the free spins begin, the Book will open and reveal a special symbol, chosen from the regular ones. That symbol will gain the ability to expand, covering the full reel. This happens only if it results in a winning combo, so you need the bonus symbols on 3 or more reels, starting from the leftmost one. Wilds will also assist though.

Theme & Design

It’s a horror themed game, one which involves a story about a werewolf and a hospital where someone is being experimented upon. There is blood everywhere, from the hospital bed, to the walls. As far as symbols are concerned, we find the Book of Madness (a notebook covered in blood), followed by regulars with a Nurse, Werewolf, Hospital Bed, Blood Bag and a Green Serum Injection. Eventually, we get several blood-stained Royals as well.

Conclusion

It might not be an entirely original slot machine, but I appreciated the change in scenery. I’d expect the game to be a huge hit during Halloween, for players that love the Book style slots, since there aren’t other scary alternatives available to them in this category.
