Booongo’s latest release is Aztec Sun, a game that they’ve dedicated to one of the very popular ancient civilizations of South America. They’ve turned it into a slot machine with a couple of interesting features and adequate rewards, but they didn’t create anything truly memorable here.
Aztec Sun is a slot which offers 5x3 reels, along with 25 paylines. The game gives us several fixed jackpots to go after, the best one being the Grand with a 1,000x payout. Using stacked wilds, scattered Pyramids, free spins with low symbols removed, and a bonus game, it’s going to have enough to make you curious, but none of it will be new.
Betting and Prizes
As you pick the value of the bet for the upcoming spin, a range will be available for it, between $0.25 and $60. This gives you the ability to spend up to $2.40 per line, if you want to. There is no option to reduce the number of lines, so you’re always using all 25.
As for the payouts that you can go after, Aztec Sun will have a bonus feature which gives you a chance at a Grand Jackpot, with a fixed value, of 1,000x the round’s stake. Alternatives come from the regular combinations, but those pay at most 10x the stake on each line, or up to 250x if you fill the reels with them. Obviously, it’s more of a slot machine for casual players, since lower top payouts tend to be associated with less risk.
Aztec Sun Slot Features
Moving on to special features, there aren’t any huge ones in Aztec Sun. It’s a combination of features that I’ve found in many other games, revolving around wilds, free spins and bonus features which trigger the bigger prizes through a Hold and Win mechanic.
First, you have the Snake Wilds, which you can get to cover a full reel at times, as it lands stacked. You can use it as a replacement symbol, but only if it’s not a scatter that needs the favor.
Second, the Pyramid scatters, which you will use to gain access to 8 free spins. The three middle columns can get these scatters. The free spins are retriggered via the same three Pyramids, with an extra 8 rounds.
The bigger advantage that I’m seeing in Aztec Sun, is the fact that the game has only high value symbols on the reels for the entire duration of this feature. You get the feature symbols and the four top paying positions, but none of the low value ones, so it’s both easier and more profitable on average.
As for the bonus game, this one is activated via 6+ Bonus Coins landing scattered in view. It’s the Hold and Win mechanic, which we’ve seen on other occasions. It triggers a Respin feature, where only blank spots and Bonus Coins can land. The 3 respins that you start with will reset, whenever additional Coins appear. The triggering Coins, and any others that you may get after that, will be locked in their positions. At the end of the feature, the best case scenario is that you get the Grand Jackpot to trigger, and it’s worth 1,000x the stake.
Theme & Design
The slot machine gives us the usual Booongo-style graphics, and it’s similar in design with other releases from them. Though it’s good enough to play, and it doesn’t look dated, when I think of high end graphics, I don’t typically associate them with this category. It’s a relatively common theme as well, based on the Aztec worship of the Sun. Its symbols give us a Snake Wild, a Pyramid Scatter, Bonus Coins, plus a Gold Idol, a Bird, a Predator and a Fish, while the four low value symbols are with Royals.
Aztec Sun is not a bad game, but neither is this a slot machine that everyone would want to play and have fun with. It mostly looks like filler content, with features and graphics that are easily found in other games. All in all, I wouldn’t say you should stay away from it, but neither can I recommend it as a must play game.
