Aztec Expedition: Thundershots is one of Playtech’s slot games. The Thundershots series also had a slot called Chili Eruption, released just a couple of months ago. The themes don’t have much in common obviously, except for a somewhat similar location. We’re visiting South America and learning about the Aztecs in this new release, though we’re seeing the same ancient temple as its focus, and the jungle in the background.
Delivering 30 active lines, and using 5x4 reels to do it, Aztec Expedition: Thundershots does look like it could’ve offered more. Among its main features, it relies on the wild symbol, a Bonus Wheel, scatters, as well as free spins. You could walk away with a jackpot worth 5,000x the stake of the round, in a game that has a 95.50% RTP.
In the left half of the bottom row, you will find a Total Bet option, which you can use to get the amount that works for you. There is going to be a range from $0.10 to $450 there, to use for each spin.
Aztec Expedition: Thundershots has several fixed jackpots, which it can trigger through its bonus game. As you progress to the top of a pyramid, you can claim a Gold (5,000x), Silver (1,000x), or Bronze Jackpot (500x).
One downside, would be the presence of a lower RTP than expected. It’s at 95.50%, and the expected RTP in a modern slot machine would be closer to 96% or above it.
Even though it’s not always expected of a slot machine that uses regular lines, Aztec Expedition: Thundershots actually incorporates cascading reels, a system that has the potential to bring you new winning combinations without you having to pay extra. It requires at least one winning combo first, as this triggers a feature that removes the symbols involved, keeping only the wilds that were part of the combo (for up to 3 cascades, but it’s random). New symbols that come in, may form new wins.
The image used for the Wild symbol, is that of a Gold Idol. Landing on all reels, the wild may contribute to a new combo, but only if all requirements are met. You still need 3+ matching symbols on the pay line, the wild doesn’t do any miracles. If involved in wins, it may remain on the reels, for a maximum of 3 cascades.
To access the bonus game, you need three of the Bonus Idols to be visible at the same time, on reels 2-4. There will be a spin on the Wheel then, as part of the Gates of Destiny bonus. Depending on what comes, you may get free spins, Thundershots, Temple of Gods, or the Treasure Run bonus.
When it comes to graphics, I found Aztec Expedition: Thundershots to be an acceptable design. What I’m saying, is that it’s not going to be a downside for the slot, but I wouldn’t call it a plus for it either. These are mostly average graphics, with some decent symbols, the top-paying ones.
You’re going to encounter images with idols, used for the wild and scatter, while regulars shows us black panthers, snakes, pendants, and European conquistadors. The lesser symbols are much more boring, using simple images of gemstones, colored in pink, blue, orange, or green.
Aztec Expedition: Thundershots could do better in the long run, and I’m not a fan of its RTP, but otherwise I think you’re going to like the variety in special features. Of course, most of them are locked behind the bonus symbols, so the base game has only cascades and wilds to give you.
