Designing an interesting game, with beautiful industrial inspired graphics, is not that difficult when looking at the Steampunk genre. A lot of developers were at least moderately successful when using this type of world as inspiration, and one example would be Temperance, from Old Skool Studios.
Besides the interesting theme, what they came up with for Temperance is a setup with 5 reels & 20 paylines, where wins of 1,000x the stake are the highest rewards which appear to be possible. Wild symbols are in there, as are free spins or a bonus game called Survival, and those should help make this slot just a little bit more attractive. RTP of 95.02% is one of the few downsides that I’ve found for the game.
To pick the bet, all you need to do is click on the button with the hand on it, and it will add to the total amount which is used for the next spin. There is a range between $0.20 and $10, which means that each of the 20 coins used here will have values between $0.01 and $0.50.
Getting the top payouts of this game requires that you have entire active lines covered only with wild symbols, as those will offer the most, 1,000 coins for each combo. 1,000x the stake becomes the ultimate target then, with the requirement being that you cover the reels completely with wilds.
On the other hand, the game has a Return to Player of 95.02%, which is not great. As better games tend to be closer or above 96%, this one is going to have a lot of competitors which do better.
The Guy is your wild symbol in Temperance. Get this one to appear next to regular symbols, and it will adapt to them, forming a combo together. The alternative is better, but more difficult to achieve, as getting up to five wilds to form their own wins will pay up to 1,000 coins per line.
Diver icons are going to act as scatters, which you may get only on the reels 1, 3 or 5. Together, the three scatters will trigger a Survival Bonus Game. For this feature, you need to make selections, and there will be cash prizes paid for each good pick that is made. There are five levels that you can advance through, but hitting Collect ends the feature early.
Up to 20 free spins are also available, and to get inside you will need 3 to 5 Girl scatter symbols in view. A multiplier is picked at random for each spin, and it can be as high as 10x. The wilds are going to show up stacked quite often, which is another bonus feature. Landing another set of Girl scatters retriggers the feature.
It’s a Steampunk-style game, which is always a plus for a slot machine, as I’m yet to find one that looks bad while sporting this look. There are several characters on the reels, with men, women and divers as feature symbols. The other icons show off diver helmets, a Sonar screen, a Radio and Bottles. Lastly, you will discover that the four card suits will also show up on the reels. Surrounding the game area, is the same Steampunk style design, with cogs and wheels, and an underwater city.
Temperance is a good game for the Steampunk genre, featuring exciting bonuses and multipliers, and even with good enough rewards. Where it fails to impress, is when it comes to its average Return to Player.
