Dark King Forbidden Riches Slot Machine Review

NetEnt’s new game, Dark King: Forbidden Riches, does seem to stay true to its word for the most part, delivering a very dark atmosphere and fantasy inspired graphics that will involve more than a few human skulls. Where it seems to fail, is when it comes to delivering those forbidden riches, as I didn’t find its payouts to be all that exciting.

Dark King: Forbidden Riches is a slot machine with 5x3 reels and 20 paylines, the usual setup of most games these days. It’s going to have rewards going as high as 2,000x the stake, all while the RTP is at a 96.06% that I’m good with. Among its features, the game will focus mostly on wilds and multipliers, along with free spins with sticky wilds.

Betting and Prizes

As you’re taking the wager up, from the minimum value of just $0.20, there is the option to go as high as $400 per spin. That would mean line bets of up to $20, which should be major if you’re getting the bigger rewards.

As for the payouts involved, up to 2,000x the stake will be paid in a single spin, which would mean up to $800,000 for those that can afford to use the highest setting of the wager.

The slot’s volatility is medium to high, which is not a great combination, when you couple it with a top payout of only 2,000x. Otherwise, there are multipliers inside that can help out, and the RTP is set to 96.06%, so on those fronts the game looks alright.

Dark King: Forbidden Riches Game Features

Blue Orbs are symbols that will serve as wilds in Dark King: Forbidden Riches. You get them on the reels, to form combinations with, either on their own or when they’re acting as replacements. They do pay very well, as much as the jackpot symbol, so it’s always nice to see them make an appearance.

The Blue Orb wilds have one extra gift to give you, provided that at least two show up at the same time. You get a multiplier increase for all wins of the round, based on the number of wilds present, and up to 5x boosts to wins are possible in each spin where up to 5 wilds show up.

Of course, the free spins are also present here, and they’re easily triggered if you get the scatters that are required. You need anywhere from 3 to 5 such symbols, on a similar number of reels, to get 10 to 15 free spins.

The middle positions on reels 2 and 4, along with the full 3rd reel, will become covered by a special hot zone. If wild symbols land in those areas, they turn sticky for this feature, while also adding 1 extra round to the total. What is great here, is that the multiplier of up to 5x applied by wilds to all wins is still possible, and now the game takes into account both regular and sticky wilds.

Theme & Design

NetEnt went with a darker design in Dark King: Forbidden Riches, where a king of the undead appears to be the main character. You see human skulls being used as decorations around the game area, while for its symbols there are several images of various disturbing looking creatures and of the king himself, and the whole thing seems to have a Gothic style to it. We also find the Royals in there, in lower value icons, but they too have that Gothic influence in their design.

It fits the story, but it might not be interesting for all players, depending on the type of design that you typically go for.

Conclusion

Dark King: Forbidden Riches looks like a decent game to be playing with, though at the same time it doesn’t seem to be a great one. It’s got average top payouts and RTP, a darker design that’s a bit too difficult to make out, and a medium-high volatility that doesn’t give the player big enough rewards ultimately. Compare it with other NetEnt slots, and you might not be satisfied with the end result, even though it’s not a bad game.
