Aloha! Christmas Edition Slot Review
|Release date||Dec 2020|
|Betting Range (€/$)||0.10 - 200|
Aloha! Christmas Edition is a sequel for a NetEnt release, a very popular slot machine which launched back in 2016. The update is a surprising one, mostly because a Christmas party is not typically associated with the warm weather of Hawaii, or with Tiki bars. It’s what plenty of people would likely prefer though, being on a beach during the holidays, holding a cocktail, so that’s what NetEnt is giving us. It’s an update mostly when it comes to the game mechanics and math model, so it will be a different experience than what you got so far.
6x6 reels will provide you with a game area on which wins will come via clusters of matching symbols (9 or more needed). You are going to get a chance at top wins of up to 1,750x, in a slot with 96% RTP and medium volatility. If you care more about features, those include mystery symbols, up to 7x multiplier wilds, free spins and respins.
Betting and Prizes
For a game with clusters rather than lines, using fixed wagers makes more sense, and so you will find that you get the option to spend between $0.10 and $200, on each spin that you go through.
It’s still not the type of game to pay you a life-changing amount, but even at 1,750x the stake, it appears to be doing better than the previous slot in the series. That amount will only come once multipliers of up to 7x start getting involved, as otherwise your top wins will not go higher than 250x.
The volatility of the slot has increased somewhat, and it’s now considered a Medium, but rewards are better as well.
While I like many of the changes made for the Christmas Edition of Aloha!, the decrease in RTP to 96% is not one of them. It’s not a huge drop though, and the game remains within the area where RTP is considered decent.
Aloha! Christmas Edition Slot Features
Getting paid in Aloha! Christmas Edition is possible when clusters of 9+ matching symbols appear next to each other, touching horizontally or vertically. As symbols appear stacked on the reels, it’s not as difficult to get that many symbols next to each other, even though many other games require fewer positions occupied in their clusters.
When forming a winning cluster, a Respin may come next, but it’s a random feature, not guaranteed. It’s going to keep the winning symbols sticky on the reels, respinning only the other positions. If you get additional symbols for those clusters, the respins continue. At the end of this feature, the game uses a multiplier of up to 7x, using the number of symbols in the cluster as a basis for that choice.
Another random option, will be the one that adds Mystery Symbols on the reels. As usual, all symbols of this type will transform to a single other type, with a chance that one of those positions will become a multiplier wild (2x to 7x values). This is the only way to get a wild symbol in this game, through other features, as it doesn’t land on the reels otherwise.
The only real feature symbol that you will encounter during paid spins, the Postage Stamp scatter is responsible for the activation of the free spins. All you need is for 3+ symbols of this type to land, and the free spins choice will follow. The MAX version is the much more volatile one, but the odds of a big prize are better:
- Tiki Bar Free Spins: has 10 free spins and uses 2x to 4x wild multipliers.
- Tiki Bar MAX Free Spins: 6 rounds, where multipliers of the wilds are 4x, 5x and 7x.
In both types of free spins, you will find that Starfish icons will appear on the reels. These are collected, and once you get three, the game takes away the lowest value symbol and adds 2 extra free spins. You can end up with a game area which has only top paying symbols.
Theme & Design
If you enjoyed Aloha! Cluster Pays, then the Christmas Edition is going to feel like more of the same. There is a change of scenery, but the symbols are very similar, and it’s mostly about the few Christmas-style modifications that they get. The top paying Tiki symbols (Red, Blue and Green) now have Santa hats on their head, and the same goes for the Starfish during free spins, but otherwise you get the same collection of symbols (Pineapple, Coconut, Shell, Pink Flowers). The Mystery symbol and the Postage Stamp scatter are the only others you see.
Aloha! Christmas Edition is still a good casino game, and while more tradition-loving players will not enjoy it during the Christmas holidays, it’s a perfectly decent slot to try out at any point during the year. It’s going to give you only medium volatility, but with appropriate rewards and an updated list of features.
