The murder mystery genre gets another slot machine, in Coffee House Mystery, one of the releases coming from Merkur. The game doesn’t excel graphics wise, but when you look at its RTP and at some of the features offered inside, I think that you will want to check it out nonetheless.
To give you an idea on the type of action that you will find in Coffee House Mystery, your winning combinations are going to be formed on 20 lines, with 5 reels requiring just as many symbols in order to deliver the payouts of up to $1,000 that are possible. Features include about four different wilds, scatters and free spins.
Betting and Prizes
The total bet is selected directly, by clicking on the green button with the value. The menu that’s opened next lets you pick a wager between $0.20 and $40. There are only 8 possible values for the bet within that range, so you can’t get to the exact number that you might need.
You can land a payout of $1,000 if the right five symbols appear on the same line. Let’s not forget the 96.95% average Return to Player, one of the bigger figures you will see in a slot machine these days, definitely in the top 10%.
Coffee House Mystery Slot Features
If you look closely at the reels, you will notice that there are several small figures placed in the corners of the five reels, at the top/bottom and left/right positions. These are all different types of wild symbols, which will expand in different ways on the reels. The characters range from witnesses to Detective Dan himself.
First, there is Detective Dan, an expanding wild which will cover four symbol positions, giving you a 2x2 area that becomes wild. It can appear at random from one of the four corners of the game area.
Office John is another random wild, but one that you get on reel 3, from the bottom. It expands on the reel if triggered.
Miss Lucy is a symbol that also expands, only it does it in a cross-shaped area, either on the first three or the last three reels.
Espresso is the fourth and final expanding wild that may trigger at random. It gives you nine wild symbols on the middle three reels, and so it’s an extremely valuable feature.
Besides the various random wilds that you can get, there are also scatters to be had, and three on the right reels can trigger 10 free spins. There is something special in this feature as well, the possibility of unlocking two additional Pay windows to play in, one of which is already available at the start. These are additional sets of reels, which you play for free.
To unlock the second Pay window, you need to retrigger the feature and get 10 extra free spins.
Theme & Design
The action obviously takes place in a coffee house, but the game isn’t as clear on the mystery that’s being solved. It might be a diamond that was stolen, as that is one of the feature symbols that you will see inside. Other symbols will be expanding wilds which appear ta random and show you characters or an espresso. The three main characters are Detective Dan, Office John and Miss Lucy. Regular symbols include the pocket watch, the coffee mug, cake and napkins. There was enough room on the reels for them to include several playing cards at the end.
I doubt anyone’s going to play the game for its graphics, but the interesting features and the various expanding wilds might make the difference.
