With the Day of the Dead holiday approaching in Mexico, we’re once again seeing several slot machines being released, using this very same day for inspiration. In the case of Sugar Skulls, we’re getting the Booming Games version for this holiday, a very well designed slot with a mixed Death/Mexico theme which works out great.
Sugar Skulls will involve some excellent prizes and features, so as you spin 5 reels and activate 20 lines, you may find inside Random Fiesta Awards, Major Free Spins, stacked symbols, scatters and wilds. Payout wise, some combinations can be expected to pay as much as $20,000 (1,000x).
Betting and Prizes
Booming Games is not the type of developer to over-complicate things, not when it comes to betting at least. The bets are going to vary between $0.20 and $400, without any mention of changing lines or coin values. You’re simply covering 20 lines, and the range for their bet will be $0.01 to $20.
Moving on to payouts, the most interesting part of all, the right combo in Sugar Skulls will deliver up to 1,000 coins, or $20,000. It’s not a huge amount, but the odds of having screens filled with high paying symbols are better than average during some features, so it should even out. In theory, the 1,000x the stake potential of this game should translate into rewards of up to $400,000.
Sugar Skulls Slot Features
Three different features can be expected in Sugar Skulls, and at least one of them is theme appropriate, which is what I hope to see in every slot machine that has something interesting to say.
In the case of Sugar Skulls, that theme appropriate feature is going to be the Pinata Bonus. It’s a symbol that is star-shaped, and it’s showing a pinata which is filled with prizes. When it appears, it will burst and will deliver Random Fiesta Awards. It’s just a random reward that you will get at times, but it’s designed in a way that makes the game better, which I appreciate.
Second, you will also discover a Wild Logo symbol on the reels. These are present on all columns, and they may form their own wins at times. For that, you need 3 to 5 Wilds in position on the same line, left to right. Otherwise, they’re just going to be substitutes and hopefully will get you smaller wins from other combinations. Don’t count on the wild acting as a scatter’s replacement, it doesn’t happen here, just like in 99% of the other games.
The final feature, and the one where the chances of getting paid well are best, is going to involve the Major Free Spins. These are activated via 3 scatter symbols (Free Spins logo) and the rounds which follow will deliver only wilds and stacked high-paying symbols, the low ones being removed.
Theme & Design
It’s the Day of the Dead, and so you see death related images on the reels. The high-paying symbols are skulls of dead people, which have come to life for this one day. They’re beautifully decorated, colorful and sometimes with flowers on their heads. Candy and food is involved as well, so it’s a good occasion for a feast. Add a couple of logos and a pinata, and you will get in the mood quickly. While Royals are generally not appreciated, here they’ve been designed quite well.
Sugar Skulls delivers awesome graphics, a couple of good features and the free spins in particular have the potential to make your day.
