Skulls Up
  • Release: Jan 2020
  • Soft: Quickspin
  • RTP: ---
  • Reels: 5
  • Lines: 243
  • Mobile: Yes

One of the first slots that Quickspin has in store for 2020, Skulls Up is a game that’s likely to be as interesting as the rest of their line-up. It will offer a pirate theme, which is something that players never seem do get enough of, especially with the design being as good as what this developer typically has.

Red Hot Tamales
  • Release: Jan 2020
  • Soft: IGT
  • RTP: 95.83%
  • Reels: 3
  • Lines: 27
  • Mobile: Yes

A brand new IGT slot machine, but with an older setup and design style, Red Hot Tamales is inspired by Mexico’s fiery foods by the looks of it, but at the same time it relies on classic symbols that have been adapted for the occasion.

Book of Atem
  • Release: Jan 2020
  • Soft: Microgaming
  • RTP: 96.45%
  • Reels: 5
  • Lines: 10
  • Mobile: Yes

With Book of Atem, a slot which was designed by All41Studios, Microgaming now has an exclusive Book-style game of their own. Expect to find better graphics than Book of Ra had, but everything else remains pretty much the same, so no points for originality there. On the other hand, if you want a better design, but with the features and mechanics that you love, this one is not a bad slot to try out.

Sword of Khans
  • Release: Jan 2020
  • Soft: Thunderkick
  • RTP: ---
  • Reels: 5
  • Lines: 10
  • Mobile: Yes

Sword of Khans is a release from Thunderkick, and the slot machine in question comes with a theme which takes us back in time, to the era of the Khans, military rulers of the Mongol Empire. It’s a very well designed slot, with highly detailed images of mostly soldiers and war related tools, and as a Thunderkick title I think you will appreciate it.

Esqueleto Explosivo 2
  • Release: Jan 2020
  • Soft: Thunderkick
  • RTP: ---
  • Reels: 5
  • Lines: ---
  • Mobile: Yes

Esqueleto Explosivo 2 is an upcoming game from Thunderkick, which has a release date in January 2020. It’s a sequel for another highly popular slot machine of theirs, and the inspiration for the series is coming from the Mexican holiday called Day of Dead. It’s a grim sounding name, but in Thunderkick’s interpretation it’s turning into a fun slot machine, with humor and quality graphics all present.

Wildhound Derby
  • Release: Jan 2020
  • Soft: Play'n'Go
  • RTP: ---
  • Reels: 5
  • Lines: 40
  • Mobile: Yes

A game that’s available at Play n Go casinos starting from January 2020, Wildhound Derby is a very well designed slot machine which uses a dog racing inspired design. You’re at the dog track and you’re looking at a licensed dog race between hounds, with the winner getting a cup and a check. The quality is at a high level, particularly design wise.

Wild Blood 2
  • Release: Jan 2020
  • Soft: Play'n'Go
  • RTP: 96.54%
  • Reels: 6
  • Lines: 20
  • Mobile: Yes

Wild Blood 2 is a sequel that’s coming out via Play n GO, scheduled for release in early 2020. The previous game in the series was launched back in 2013, so it took them quite a bit of time to come out with the second title. It’s a vampire themed slot machine, same as before, and the same beautiful vampires are the stars of this game as well.

Rise of Maya
  • Release: Jan 2020
  • Soft: NetEnt
  • RTP: 96.42%
  • Reels: 5
  • Lines: 10
  • Mobile: Yes

One of the slots that NetEnt plans to release in 2020, Rise of Maya is a game which has a Mayan connection, a type of theme that we’ve seen quite a few times already, it’s not unusual at all these days. It’s getting the NetEnt treatment though, so you get interesting features and excellent graphics from it, both good reasons to check it out.

Fortune Coin
  • Release: Jan 2020
  • Soft: IGT
  • RTP: ---
  • Reels: 5
  • Lines: 5
  • Mobile: Yes

Fortune Coin is a Chinese themed game, an IGT slot which is set to be released on January 23rd, 2020. It’s a slot machine with fairly standard graphics for a Chinese theme, but with fixed jackpots to pay and with a couple of decent features to take advantage of.

Coywolf Cash
  • Release: Jan 2020
  • Soft: Play'n'Go
  • RTP: 96.50%
  • Reels: 5
  • Lines: 20
  • Mobile: Yes

The Native American theme is often used when wildlife is chosen as a focus in slot machines, and for Coywolf Cash that’s what Play n GO did once again.

Slot Development Trends 2020

Every year, there are certain trends which seem to develop, taking into account what players like and any new mechanics and game engines that might take off. Keep reading, to find out what kind of trends we might see in new online slots for 2020.

  • Even more high volatility slots: with high volatility games on the rise, and with the Megaways game engine now part of dozens of slots, we can expect for 2020 to offer a lot more of the same thing. Even developers that have traditionally been mostly about low to medium volatility games, such as NetEnt, are now going after the more experienced players. In NetEnt’s case, we’re seeing Max versions released for some of their slots, with higher volatility and bigger payouts, so they found a way to cover both types of players.
  • Bigger top payouts: the Megaways craze got us started on this path, and there are a lot more slot machines with 10,000x or higher payouts than ever before. The volatility goes up, but the rewards go up as fast as the risk does. I expect for this trend to continue, and for developers to keep outdoing each other with the potential rewards in their new slots.
  • More challenges to the Megaways system: we’ve already seen some early attempts at new game engines, usually looking like variations on the Megaways, with as many as 1,000,000 ways to win (Red Rake’s Million Ways system, for example) offered in some of them. I suspect we will find quite a few more examples of developers trying to invent something unique and fun for the players, with enormous potential. At the same time, I’m curious about what Big Time Gaming has up its sleeve, I’m sure that we haven’t heard the last of them, they’re still innovating with almost every new game they put out.
  • Flash technology is on its way out: with the market’s biggest browser, Chrome, announcing that they’re not going to include support for Flash starting from December 2020, I expect that as we get closer to that date, we’re going to see many of the older slot machines being converted to HTML 5. That’s for the popular ones, but many of the others I suspect will be retired once that date comes around. 2020 might very well be a year of renewal for some of the older popular games, the ones still offered only in Flash.
  • Mobile Gambling: mobile gambling is fast growing more popular, and a lot of the new developers are building their games with a mobile-first mentality, adapting the controls and graphics for use on this type of platform.

Popular 2020 Upcoming Developers

As always, there have been quite a few new developers introduced to the market this year, and we will see new online slots in 2020 from plenty of other such studios. Some of them are released on their own, others are supported by partnerships like the one Microgaming has with various smaller independent studios (Triple Edge Studios, Just For The Win, Neon Valley Studios, Slingshot Studios, Gameburger Studios, etc) to provide them with fresh games. We will be seeing more from these, and since they’re marketed as Microgaming exclusives, they will get a lot of attention from players.

Of course, there will be other smaller studios that get a lot of attention, thanks to the quality of their games alone. I look forward to discovering the ones that stand out, in 2020 and beyond.

New Slot Features

With such a large number of developers creating slot machines for the online market, you can count on the competition resulting in innovation, as the companies are trying to stand out. Some will try to outdo the Megaways system, and here I’d mention the Million Ways system which has been used already, along with others that are similar. We will also see variations on the usual bonus games, free spins and wilds, in some cases with huge multipliers that will impress and have a major effect on a game’s volatility.
